ATTEMPT TO
SSASSIHATE
L. C LESURE AT HIS HOME FRI-
DAY NIGHT.
Two Shots were Fired both Missing
Their Mark by Narrow Margin
No Clue as to the Perpetra-
tor of thi Attempt.
The writer of the anonymous let
ter to I.. C. I.eiure ovldeiitl endeav-
ored to make Rotil his threat Irlda
night and attacked Mr. Lcsuro as he
was entering hU home after having
attended tl.O iierformntice of the
Clansman. Two shots were llred In
rapid succession ono of which pass
ed through the lapel of the coat and
grated the outside. The other tot
missed Mr. Lesure but a few Inches.
If either bullet had been effective.
he would have been hilled. One
ot tho bullets just missed U. T. ltox-
roat of Keller who was with Mr. I.e-
sure at the time and was going home
with him.
Tho facts of the nffalr as obtained
are as follows:
Sometime ago I.. C. I-esure receiv
ed through the malls an anonymous
letter stating that the writer and I.o-
sure could not llvo In the same iu.i
together that Ardmoio waft too small
for thu two of them and that ho l.o-
sure had better loon cut that the
writer was after him. Mr. I.osute
paid little hted to the nffalr as ho
did not think he had cnuso to and of
ten romnrked that If ho know who tho
wrltor waB could mnko him cake-
walk down Main street.
Mr. Lesuro when seen yostorday
morning said ; "Mr. Ilcxroat and I
walked In upon tho porch to my
homo at about ten minutes after 11
o'clock. Wo spent some little time
thoro cleaning tho mud off our feet
and I unlocked the door to tho hall
We passed anil ns I opened tho door
to tho living room somo mnn who
wns crouched near tho door rose and
llred at me. Tho first ball evidently
passed between mo and Mr Hexroat

I stepped back and told Hexroat t"
piiti't bin self. At one the (limiulu
of the amin ntntis lettei came to me
and I determined If otnlble to uso'r-
tain who my would be assassin Is
and I re-entered the hmise. QuickC
another shot was tired and 1 grappled
with the man In the dark. When 1
approached him accidentally I caught
n caning fork which he held In his
hand and took It from him. Quicker
that though I was threw n to the floor
by a man much stronger than 1 and
when I fell I drew tity gun and fired
at htm. The would be assassin ran
front the house and 1 .. nniiig that hi
had entered the Imtll mon plunged
In here after him but uulofcly heard
footsteps on the back imtcIi and I ran
In that direction and fired again. The
bullet from my gun fired at the first
shot cannot bj found and 1 believe
that it entered the body trf the man
The bullet fired at the second shot
wns found." I
Mr. ".esure Is of (ho opinion that
ho man name bent upon murder as
to had f very npiiortunlty to oscaiie
lthout detection if ho had been there
'or bttrglaiy. '"Vhoever my attempt-
al nwHsti wns he wns n negro I
.now this from tho glimpse I got of
'llm as he fired the second shot be-
fore we grappled.
Mr. I.osuro Is of the opinion that
'ho man who nttuckod him Is a ne-
gro nnd Is ot slim build and nlmut
six feet tall. Krom the tracks found
around tho house yesterday morning
It is ory evident that two men wero
together as there wero abundant evi
dence that two men ran together
from tho house.
Kntrnnce to tho house was effect-
ed tnrough the rear door which was
left unlocked. Tho screen door was
fastened and tho screen 'cut nnd the
back door opened. The trespasser
arranged everything bo as escape
would be easy. All of the back win-
dows wore raised and all of tho doors
opened throughout tho house loading
to tho back end bo as no obstacles
would bo In tho way of a good get-
away. Mr. LcBuro has no idea who tho
assaulting party can bo or what ob-
ject any one has on his llfo. Unless
It Is some negro politician "I have
no enemies In tho city or this section
of the country and Bpenk to every-
body. I am at outs with only ono man
In the city and I know him to be too
honorable to think of such a thing
as assassination;" said Mr. I.esure.
O. A. Wells a prominent republi
can nnd ono of the tioputy United
States clerks In this city who rooms
at the LeBuro home received a letter
similar to tho ono written Mr. Losuro
Tho mlssllo received by Mr. Wells
was typewritten with no Blgnnturo nt'
tached and no possible cluo ns to tho
wrltor.
The letter In effect was ns follows:
"You had better move your loom or
you will meet with trouble. You owe
It to tho party."
From tho tono of tho letter that was
rocelved by Mr. Wells It lookB as if
tho assailant of Mr. I.esuro was Bomo
one In tho republican ranks. During
tho hist campaign Mr. I.osure was an
active democrat and did oonsldrablo
work for tho party. Ho was also a
white supremacy man and talked a
Ki'i'ut deal about the separatum of tho
races In schools nnd on passenger
trains.
The nffa'r has been !aiu! In Hp
hands of tl.e marshal's of'k'o mi.; the
police for Investigation. Tho promises
were carefully gone over Saturduy
morning by tho officers who measur-
ed the tracks of the party that ran
across tho back lot. While no ar-
rests have beon made ns yot tho offi-
cers have several jmrtles under sus-
picion and In all probability somo
ono will bo arrested In a few days.
