stantly killed Miss Ktntiia Hlnkoly a
young white woman also employed at
tho same hotel today at noon and
then stabbed himself three times per-
haps fatally. Agos stilted that he
committed the deed because he loved
the girl and she would soon ninny
another man.
He was promptly placed In Jail and
physician summoned. In his pocket.
were found three letters one each to
his mother ami his grandmother In
Mexico both In Spanish and one In
English to the girl ho killed.
Miss Illakely was well liked by all
who knew hur and tho tragedy litis

excitement exists. A lynching Is prob-

at the Slogol hotel today at neon in

Dcnlson Texas Oct. 20. A negro
named Joe Potts whllo attempting in
swim Red river on horseback was
drowned last night at the Hlocmflold
ferry east of hero four miles. Tho
body lodged against the ferryboat and
was recovered.

memorable date in the career of Mrs.
I3mma I.e Doux convicted murderess
though neither by word nor action
did the woman Indicate that the day
was of any especial Interest or im-
portance so far as she wuh concerned.
If tho sentence of the court In her
case had been carried out she would
today have mounted the scaffold In
San Quentlu prison and paid the
penalt of death for one of the mnt
diabolical crimes commuted In Cali-
fornia In remit years. As the case
now stands however the woman
probably lias many days of life ho-
tore her. Through an appeal to the
higher courts It Is assured that the

long time to come. Meanwhile tho
woman though under sentence ot
death lias made a display of nerve
and self-control (hat has been the talk
of the prison attendants mid created

istering morphine after he had been

found crushed Into a trunk left on the
platform at tho Southern I'nclflc de-
pot in this city. Tho stencil attract-
ed tne attention of the railroad men
