an opportunity to experiment and
learn something about business ad
ministration and self-government In a
way thoy do not havo whero these
affairs aro In control of tho -white
race. But on tho other hand I found
a considerable number of colored men
In business of somo kind or other and
many of them doing qulto as well as
the whlto man bosldo them. On tho
whole I came away from this now
southwestern country with tho feollng
that the negro peoplo In this roglon
wero making real and rapid progress
and doing ns well as any ono could
possibly oxpect of them."
