Boston's IntidmnrkH and It was real-

It la not known when tho treo began
to crow but an old Hoaton tradition
was that the wife of Thomas llancoi'.;
the eminent merchant who wa l.ydl.i

ed that her grandfather Ueceklah
Henchman planted the tree when h
waa a boy. Ttila would havu made the
tree Just 1NXI year old nt the time of
ila destruction.
It l probable that some of the many

Its outskirts and nlito In 1722 It must
have been n prominent object In Hoa-
ton for Bonner's map of the town
published in that year allows It as a
fenture.
In 1825 the llrat recorded Measure-
ment of the old elm allowed Ita di

mon la pronounced by Judges to be as
handsome In form aa it la large lu alze
and venernble In aw and It may be
worth the remark notwithstanding nil
the buffeting It haa received from
alorniH mid hurrlcanea for more than

Tho trcu waa accurately measured by
tho city engineer of Boston lu 1S55 niitl
It was found that It was considerably
larger than In 1825 Its height being
figured at peventy-flvo feet. This
allowed that it was still growing lu It'
extreme old age.
The first acrlous damage the tree re-
celved waa Il.18.TJ when tho largest of
Ita limbs waa ho vent asunder that
three branches rested on the ground
hut at much cost ami labor they were
replaced In their former positions nud
held together by Iron rods and bolts
Tho great gale In June 18(50 Injured

mer Hymnietry was destroyed and at
this time tho cavity lu the trunk was

On one of the branches which were
torn oft nt the time 100 rlngi were
counted which Indicated tho great u?e
of tho tree.
The opening of tho centennial year of
tho republic 1870 found tho tree alive.
but decrepit and It would probably
havo been decorated on Kvacuatlon
day nud the Fourth of July but. aa
stated at the beginning of this article
Feb. 15 saw Its destruction.
Tho old elm fell nt 7:17 o'clock In the
evening Ita trunk pointing toward the
Park Street church and the forco of
tho fall shattered tho trunk while the
branches were scattered In every dl
rectlou. Tho melancholy news spread
like wtldflre through tho city and soon
despite the atorm tho fallen mouarcl
was surrounded by relic hunters. Ann
cd with aaws hatchets and knives
they ipilckly detached pieces of the
branches to preserve lis souvenirs. Per-
Bona were seen In the theaters laden
with boughs and it was a common
sight that evening to see men In the
streets carrying limbs several feet In
length and as large around us a stove
pipe. Much of the treo was made Into
veneer and one book nt least of local
history haa oil Ita back cover a large
veneer from tho tree bearing on Its
face n lifelike engraving of tho same.
So passed the old elm nud Hoato:
mourned for Ita passing.
Dr. Jerome V. O. Smith mayor of
tho city In 1S51. showed his Interest In
the old olm by having tho treo care
fully pruned and cleaned nnd lie
caused to bo placed around It nn orun
mental Iron fence octagonal In shape
On the entrance gnto was attached an
oval tablet bearing tho following In
acrlptlon:
THE OLD ELM.
This tree haa been itnndlmr hero for
an unknown period. It U belloved to have
existed before tho settlement of IJoston
belnK full crown In 17::; exhibited mark
or old ago In 179: and waa nearly destroy
ed by a storm In 1832. Protected by an
iron inciosuro in
J. V. C. SMITH. Mayor.
Soon after tho falling of tho old elm
a young tree of tho sanio species was
planted In tho center of tlio luclosure
and today It has attained a largo and
aturdy growth. Coming generations of
Rostonlaus may bo familiar with a
rccond old elm on lloston Common but
It will always bo tho first old elm
which witnessed very possibly the
flret. settlement of I'urltnn Boston In
