NEW INLAND SEA.
Discovered In Southern Callfornlas
Arid Waste Lands.
El Paso. Aug. 7. An expert cnRln-
eer who has just arrived from Cali-
fornia Kays he Is satisfied that the
water which has formed on what was
heretofore a desert In southern Cali-
fornia and made a great lake Is not
ffom the overflow of the Colorado
river as at first supposed but Is from
a crevice leading to the Pacific ocean
since the lake Is many feet below sea
level and the rlso of the water over
the vast space has been so rapid as
to require more ot a How than that
discharged by several streams tho
size ot the Colorado.
Bait sea fish are also found In the
water and he believes an earthquake
opened up the crevice through which
the ocean Is seeping. The Southern
Pacific road has already been forced
to abandon Its track and build a "shoo
lly" around the lake and It is feared
It may now oven have to abandon this
and build up among1 the mountains.
Scientists believe the lake has como
to stay. It is believed this new Inland
soa will be permanent.
