ho scorns the Pullman; he proposes to
travel tb entire distance to Iowa
along the ok! ox wagon trail ' over
which he came to the Oregon country
tlfty-three years ago.
Ills outfit Is as nearly as possible an
exact reproduction of the one In which
be and his young bride made the trip
across the plains In IS.)-. Tliere it a

and a dog runniug underneath the rear
axle which probably Is a direct descend-
ant of the Iowa dog that trotted all
the way to Oregon In the pioneer days.
The oxen. Stub and Twist are pretty
much Ilka I lurk and Dandy Mr.
Meekwr's IS.' 2 team though the pio-
neer says the; are not quite nucb a
good team.
Ezra Meeker I now vnty-ve
years old. His wife of the pioneer
days Is villi living. Meeker Is a man
of mark In his own country which It
the state of Wukhlngton. He lives
near Tacoma the metropolis of Pierce
county. In which county he ued to le
the leading citizen neratine of his
wealth. He Is going back to Iuwu this
summer along the old Oregon trail not
because be wants to get hack east but
because he desires to retrace the trail
and live over again the experiences of
a highly romantic though Mrennou
and toilful era lu American history
and because he wants to write another
book.
Ezra Meeker today Is n sturdy old
gentleman with lui-liy white Imlr nnd
a gray beard. He Is u small lunu light
of build and lie wears overalls and a
soft bat. Ills manner W uiiotentn-
tloui nud his courtexy Is of the old
time kind. He telU his ytory modestly.
Though Mr. Meeker does not say so
others say that the little old man was
one of the few white men In the early
days who won the Indium' confidence
ami that this ennbled hlm to employ
them In his hop ileitis to such profit
that when the hop lleo pest wiped out
his earulngri in the early nineties he
had rulied fur the e.port trade hopj
Unit had brought hlm Sr.LO.Uio. It wiw
of the early days that Mr. Meeker
tulked as he fat on a craeker box In
his teat.
"I was reared In Indliinapolls and
was married there In ISM" he Kiud.
"Shortly after our uinrrlage my wife
nnd I started west In search of hind.
We spent'lhe winter nt Kddyvlllc In.
nud tho winter was so cold that wo de-
cided to move to Oregon so we started
hi the spring of 1S52 with the same
sort of an outfit as 1 have with me
now. We reached Portland In the full
nnd speut the winter tliere. nnd In the
spring we moved on to Pierce county.
Wash. whe-e 1 have lived ever since.
I guess tlmt'ri about all"
And yet Ezra Meeker bus written n
big book of more limn WX) pages which
ho calls "Pioneer Reminiscences of
Ptiget Sound- the Tragedy of I.eschl."
The hook contains a host of Incidents
which portray vividly the life of tho
time and the mention of It recalled
one of them to the author as he sat In
his pioneer camp iinild the splendors
of 1IH)' nnd the exposition.
"I saw In a pnpor nwhlle ago" ho
said "that the number of people who
pnHed over the Oregon trail In lKi-
and 18.13 was 2.M0. Now. you know
that can't be true. The estimate Is far
too low. Thw trail was blocked n good
part of the way with outfits and the
suffering was awful but there must
hnve been nt least -5000 who got
through.
"You know a cholera brjke out
among the emigrants and there were
hundreds who died from It. At one
place we counted fifty-one graves x!I
made within m week. Our party
escaped the cholera and got through
Without losing an animal or a piece of
baggage.
"I remember how glad we we;-o
when we got to The Dalles of the Co-
lumbia for we thought that then our
troubles were ended. Wo piled nil our
baggage ou to a big tlatboat and there
wus htirdly any room for piiHseugeri.
but we snt iiroiiud on tho baggage and
were happy. One day as we were g i-
lug through n gorge with tho moun-
tains rising high on both sides some
ono started singing softly Home.
Sweet Home.' Others took up the
song nnd we all sang onu verse. Then
w started tho second but lit the close
of the hccond line every one slopped
suddenly and we all cried llko babies
every one of u.s."
Mr. Meeker expects to continue his
Journey home time this month and
thinks ho can reach Omaha before cold
weather strikes him. He has with hlm
n hired man who takes care of the
oxen and a photographer to take pic-
tures of the landmarks with their
wIvcj to do the cooking. Mr. Meeker
Intends to tako careful notes of tho

Ardmoro I. T July IS. Fo J
lowing is aow ork cotton lot
tor by Melntyro:
There was :i commission of
very contlctin' influences at
work in cotton market which
made tho future course of prices
vory diflicult to forecast even to
the shrewdest pit broker or lead-
ing speculative interests. In
lirst place it appears that a pow
erful clique was formed last
week iirst to break down the
market and shako out tho pub
lie and outsiders and accumulate
a fresh big lino of speculation
contracts preliminary to starting
market for 11 cent basis.
Nhis movement has been shap-
ed along by tho circvlation of
various reports concerning an
early revision of tho acreage by
the Agl. Dept. and continued
damage to tho crop. The move
ment has been anticipated here
by nearly all tho heaviest opera
tors under the leadership of most
prominent speculative interests
llcts for Oct. was predicted yes
terday and this was accomplish
ed in tho advance of 30 to 40
points. It was predicted today
tho market would go to 11 l-4c
or some time tomorrow.
The Giles crop report some
what Hpset the plans of tho bulls
for boomin": the market today.
Tho weekly weather bulletin
issued at noon showed less im
provemcnt than had been looked
for in crop conditions tho past
week. Tho soiling prcssurt
howeve. rbove 11c for Oct. was
so heavy that efforts to force tho
market above that basis were
abandono for tho time being.
