Geology of the Arbuckle and Wichita
Mountains In Indian Terrltorry
and Oklahoma rine Granite
and Asphalt.
Special to tho Ardmorelto.
Washington. July 21. Tho follow-
ing statement was prepared for tho
press by Harriet Connor Brown:
For sorao tlmo past tho prospector
has been abroad with his pickax and
his dlvln'lns-rcd In tho mountain? of
Indian Territory and Oklahoma. Tho
object of his search has been deposits
of precious metals. Freiuently .10
has thought his dlllgenco rewarded
and local assaycrs havo sometimes
sustained his hopes. Desirous of
aiding in this laulnhlo search mem-
bers of tho United States geological
Burvey havo recently made a special
study of tho field and Professional
Paper No. 31 Just puMlshed by tbe
Survey contains two reports which
embody tho result of investigation
made by Messrs. Joseph A. Taff and
H. Foster Bain. Mr. Taff's paper Is
entitled "A Preliminary Report rn
tho Geology of tho Arbuckle and
Wichita Mountains In Indian Tm:I
tory and Oklahoma" and Mr. Bain s
contribution Is called "An Appendix
on Itoportcd Ore Deposits of the
Wichita Mountains."
Tho gcolcgy of tho region is (lis
cussed in considerable detail by Mr.
Taff. The Arhucklo mountains cotv
stltute a moderately elevated table
laud or plateau In the cast central
part of the Chlcknsaw Nation Indian
Territory. Geologically this region
consists cf a great thickness ol rocks.
composed clilolly of limestone and a
border of conglomerates shales and
sandstones of an almost equal UiloU
ness. Sixty miles northwest cf t.il
region are the Wichita mountnlus. In
southeastern Oklahoma which aro
physlographlcally In marked contrast
to tho Aibucklo plateaus as they aro
composed of a range of rugged nioun
tains and straggling peaks and hills
set in a practically level plain. The
stratlgrapnlc lithcloglc and structur-
al relations between tho two regions
are however very close so that dis-
cussions of their gology aro with
propriety Included In a single report.
Tho report made by Mr. BaTn of his
investigations of ore 'deposits In tho
Wichltn mountains Is. unfortunately
not encouraging. Tho mountains con-
sist of a core of crystalllno rocks In-
cluding granite gabbro granite- por-
phyry and certain diabase dikes tfhe
whole partially encircled by a fringe
of Paleozoic limestones. Prospecting
has been confined in general to the
area comprising tho crystalllno rocks
which havo been .prospected 'lu live
modes of occurrence. Somo of these
woro of tho sort which In view of tho
relations of tho rcxik. might well bo
expected to warrant prospecting but
others were of kinds fhatliavo soldotr.
been found to carry ores and then
only In tho immu.!lato neighborhood

Since however the miners reported
that assays showed values In every
one of the Ave occurrences samples
were taken from all. In many cases
where no reason was seen for suspect-
ing tho presence of any vnluos the
owner or person lu chargo of the
prospect was invited to select sam
ples of what ho considered Ms rich-
est material. Mr. Bain took In all
over 300 pounds of samples from
which tho Survey chemists made 71
assays without finding even a single
trace of gold.
Whether futuro prospecting may
reveal othor occurrences which do
have value cannot It Is true bo stat-
ed. It Is believed however that tho
prospects examined wero fully repre-
sentative. It was somo compensation
to find In the tho granite mountains
near Lugnrt crystals belonging to tho
columblte-tantallto group nnd It Is
hoped Ui.it further Investigations may
show tho presence of somo of tho
rare earths.
Kvcn If there. Is no gold tho region
Is not without other valuable mineral
resources. Granite sultablo for build-
ing purposes is very abundant. Lime-

of lime and II Is also of composition
