TEACHERS' PAY.
It Is an undoubted fa I that no lata
of professional workej-s who bring
much brains and nervous energy to
their work meet with such compara
tively meager appreciation and mone-
tary remuneration as do school tench-
ers. Indeed the conscientious teach-
er must needs keep repenting to him
self or herself that the virtue of seal-
ous sacrifice Is Its own roward for
adequate reward of other sort tb&
teneher seldom gets. Commantlng
upon this-'condition of affairs Presi
dent Harpor of the 'University of Chi-
cago In the current number of the
World Today" says:
"The teacher to whom Is entrusted
tiie fostering care of our children
should surely he one whose ability we
respect. How Is It poMlble to satisfy
the conscience If a policy other than
this prevails? Is there anything
more precious than the child whether
viewing from the point of view of the
family or the slate? Is not his train
ing a thing of pre-eminent import
ance? And yet we are willing to iay
io his teacher n salary less than Is
paid In many cases to the keeper of
our horses or the keeper of onr cat
tle. Who cannot see the utter ab-
surdity of this?
'The teneher everything belli?
considered should be. and In many
cases is tne eouni or the man or wo
man who enters Into any othor pro
fessional life. Shall wo stultify our-
selve by continuing to pay the teach-
er at a rale which places on him or
her the brand of Intellectual weakness
for having nccopted n position which
promises Its occupant so little profit
or advantage.
"The time has come when tne pre
paration for teaching even In the
grades requires a preparation and a
proficiency equal to that demnnded
by any other profession. These re
qultenients havo gradually been In
creased until today in many quarters
only those possessed of vigorous phy-
sical constitution strong nnd untiring
purpose nnd. In addition a consider
able sum of money are able fo secure
the preparation called for.
"Is It Justice to these who have
pursued this laborious course of pre-
paration that in the end they should
find themselves limited to a salary so
amaTi ns to seem pitiful In view of
the hardship undergone nnd the ex
pense which hns been Incurred?"
