RICHER THAN BEFORE
We've had our share of sorrows
And we've had our time of fear.
W have waked to sad tomorrows
Hut we've lived almost a year.
And in fplte of nil the grieving
And the burdens that we bore
The old year's truly leaving
Us all richer than before.
Wo are wiser no w and kinder
Than we were when it began.
We are Just a little blinder (
To the petty faulta of man;
And when days of trouble found us
Bending sorrow to our door
To the friends who gathered round us
We are closer than bwfore.
To the old and tried and true frlond
With the pausing ot the year
Came a good and nappy new friend
With his comfort and his cheer;
Though our fortune doesn't show It
Ae w run our bank book o'er
In many ways wo know It
We are richer than before. .
We have memorlrs to treasure
All unknown a year ago.
Little sparkling gem nt pleasure
Which forever we may know;
At the eud of December
With the twelve months almost o'er
We have much we shall remember
And we'ro richer than before.

Q. Is It proper to propose to a
lady two weeks after she has pro-
cured her divorce?
A. According to the conventional
rule observed in polite society you
should havo known the lady before
sho procured her divorce.
Q. Is it advisable to mnrry money
to get into society?
A. In mnrrying money you often
place yourself In an unfortunate
position. Society Is partly made up
of self-made men. Should your
fathor-ln-law happen to 'be ono of
these he may hold you In contempt
ot your loungo Uzzard qualities. It

Story of an Apartment.
Kxplorers from Johns HMci
university havo unearthed 1." New
Mexico an apartment house that was
mado during tho stone age. T' is
apartment house was 45 stories h gh
and contained 1000 rooms. The .1 s.

IiGUa leads us to wonder whether
we really havo anything on the an-
cients. While It Is revealed that they had
all tho necessities they wer ap-
parently without some of the lux-
uries which today mako apartment
house living a constant regret.
For instance nothing has been die-
covered concerning the landlord.
Tho explorers expected to find a pet-
rifled form of a landlord ln the lob-
by of the house with a petrified ten-
ant bending over him gtono ham-
mer in hand having Just struck 'ha
fatal blow. Also thero should be 'ho
petrified forms of many other tc-
ant btaildlng nbout the lobby wi'lt
smiles etamped Indollbly on their
faces.
Tho remains of rfo pug dogs wcr
found by which wo conclude tv at
the ancients were without this chci''
accessory to npartrqont delight. It
brings up tho question as to what
tho gentlemen of the apartment
houe did on Sundays with no dss
to take out for an airing.
Talking machines were apparently
unknown. Tho explorers mako no
mention of them. Nor were tho re-
mains of anv telephone g rl found
reclining ove a switchboard wher
they generally fall asleep. No man
was found In a telephone booth w th
a petrified look of agony on his
faco and ono clenched Xlst raised In
the air as If to strike an Invisible
enemy. 1
No mention la made of nteam
radiators to keep tho rooms cool n
the winter. Perhaps they had sen. 9
other refrigerating system yet to 'o
discovered.
The apartment house was 4.1
ntories high and had no elevators.
When a tenant got Into his for'i-
flfth apartment he was compan-
tlvely safo from book agents lns-'l-i
