would not bo molested but next day
learned that tho pollco had again In
vaded their boarding Iioubo throwing
out nasty Insinuations and threaten
Ing arrest Thereupon tho consul
drovo to tho chief of police nnd des
plto efforts to restrain him walked
up to that mogul and asked what he
meant by breaking faith with tho
American government.
Tho chief began shuflling and said
ho heard that "tho girls"
But tho consul would not let him
finish. Bringing down his cano on
tho chief's desk ho cried: "Tho la
dles aro under the protection of tho
American government and unless
your dirty pollco hounds keep away

morning about 9 o'clock by Officer
Howard Gunnolls upon complaint of
W. M. Johnson a carpenter living at
tho corner of Fifth and Chlcknsha
nvonuo charging him with ravishing
his 13-yoarold daughter Nolllo. Nnr-
croBB was turned ovor. to tho United
States Commissioner Pnyno and
locked up. Ho will bo examined be-
fore him in tho near future.

ed with tho girl who told her story
In a stralghforward clear convinc
ing manner. If tho facts aro as sho

According to her tale sho was at
tho homo of her brothor Buoy John
son on Chlcknsha avenuo near Fifth
street when Narcross drove up in
his buggy Friday aftornoon and asked
her to go for a short drlvo with him.
Sho consented and got In tho buggy
and thoy started off.A short dlstanco
west of town ho announced that ho
was going to tho road Iioubo and waa
;olng to tako her with him. Sho says
sho trlod to dlBsuado him and after
being prevented from Jumping out
seized tho reins nnd tried to turn tho
buggy around but could not. Seeing
further roslstanco was useless sho re
mained quietly in tho buggy. Arriv
ing at-thq Lino House ho entered and
socurod a quart of whisky returning
with It to tho buggy and offering her
a drink which (.he took after consld
crablo urging. Though sho drank
only a small quantity of it flow to her
head llko old wine .and In a few mo
rncnts sho was beastly drunk.
What happened after that sho has
no distinct recollection. Sho romcm-
hers bolngoptillcd from tho buggy and
of being thrown on tho ground and
of fighting with her persecutor. After
struggling until her clothing was torn
from her body sho fell back exhaust
ed and a merciful Provldenco took
consciousness from her.
Sho was found somo tlmo afterward
by the proprietor of tho Lino Houso
lying under a treo. Either from tho
rough usage or tho whisky sho had
drank sho was unconscious. Ilor
clothing had been torn from her por
son and sho was almost naked. Thoro
woro bruises on her body in sovoral
places and blood upon her undor
