FRISCO DEAL LAPSES.
Kock Island May Await Final Result
of Northm Securities Case
"New York. April 14. As a first re-
sult of the Northern Securities decis-
ion -In derailing smoothly-running
"doato." the purchas of the St. Louis
aad Saa Francisco railroad by the
Rock iBtaad. aecordl&g to soral-offlcial
admlsstous today by leading Interests
In both properties will be allowed to
lapse. This action. It Is understood
represents the mutual desire of both
parties.
One closely associated with the lead-
ing Interests In the Frisco said that
a eewMBiaatJoH of the deal before
the final adjudteatloa of the Northern
Securities case would be like "dashlag
one head agataat a stone wall."
Those who control the Roek Island
situation wish to avoid possible evil
results from litigation following the
sale.
An attitude indicative of extreme de-
sire to shift responsibility to other
shoulders was assumed by the offi-
cials of both roads today. Rock Island
officials referred all inquiries to Goo.
W. Perkins the member of J. P. Mor-
gan & Co. who Is credited with being
the medium to bring together Rock
Island and Frisco Interests.
Mr. Perkins said that he did not
care to either affirm or deny the re-
port. Jamos Campbell probably the larg-
est single holder of Frisco stock was
non-committal and said that Mr. Yoa-
kum was "the man who talks."
Mr. Yoakum said: "I can not give
official verification or denial to the
story." When he said this tho presi-
dent of tho Frisco system had Just
left the'offlces of J. P. Mqrgan Sc. Co.
Another official of the St. Louis and
San Francisco said that the wholo
matter as in the hands of the Rock
Island directors. In explanation of
the relations of each party to the deal
he said:
"The proposal of the purchase came
first from tho Rock Island flarty. At
no time was Mr. Yoakum particularly
anxious to soli. He has absolute faith
In tho property and although the
price offered tempted him to sell he
would feel no disappointment 'If the
sale Is not accepted."
B. F. Yoakum was manager of the
Frisco pool as well as president of
tho road ami had full power to dis-
pose of the 'pool holdings which wduld
transfer absolute control of thei prop-
erty. The virtual admission that the deal
has been Indefinitely postponed. l not
absolutely abandoned. Is somewhat at
variance with the stntemont mado tho
day the Northern Securities decision
became known by W. H. Moore.
"The Northern Securities case will
In no wise Interfere with the sale of
tho Frisco to the Rock Island." ho
said.
Mr. Yoakum concurred in this opin-
ion Insisting that the two systems
aro not competitors.
Tho whole matter It Is understood
will bo abandoned at least until the
final decision of the case Is banded
down by tho supreme court.

PRESIDENT CARRIES A dUN.
Keeps In1 Ccrvdition to Protect Him-
self. SL Paul. Minn.. April 14 President
Roosevelt is not entirely satisfied
with the protection afforded htm by
the constant attendance of a squad of
socret service men. so he carries a big
rrvolTer la one of the outside pockets
of bis overcoat.
Governor Van Sant made this dis-
covery while the president was In SL
Paul but the story did not become
known until today.
When the president arrived at the
capttol to address the legislature he
was taken first Into the executive
chamber where he and Governor Van
Sant were relieved of their overcoats
by the governor's colored messenger.
The party then proceeded to the house
of representatives.
Later when all were about to start
for the drive and everything ras In
confusion of preparation the governor
happened to run his hand Into the
pocket of the overcoat Into whirh ho
had been assisted and with much sur
priFe he called ouL "Hullo this Isn't
my coaL This one has a big gun in
the pocket of 1L"
The president standing close at
band ohuekled softly and turning to
the governor with the expansive
smile that la one of his characteristics
said quietly: "Oh It's all right gover-
nor: that coat belongs to me.'
An examination of the two over-
coats showed that the mistake was
not at all to bo wondered at as both
were black and mado In the same style
with the black velvet collar. Then too
both were found to be about the same
size In general measurements and the
garment of the president was as com-
fortable fit for the governor asvhls
own.
