blnnket occupies a ooclnl position of
'great liiilepenilence. Her property
rights nre cnrofttlly respected. She
lowns much of the wealth of the tribe
iirnd licr children belong to her nlone.
A wcv.mn may have hundreds of sheep
when she marries nnd not one be-
. comes tho property of her husband.
Descent Is traced through tho female
line. It Is n survival of tho prlmltlvo
1 The Navojo woman has no perma-
ticnt home. The process of the tribe
has been greatly Impeded by Its dnrk
superstition that every death Is caused
by Chlnde the devil and that evil
spirits linger about the dead body. Tho
house Is never occupied again. The
' corpse Is burial In the lloor and the
house pulled down over It and a Nil-
vajo would frctftc before he would
make a flro upon the logs of on" of
these deserted heaps. So tho Navajo
"hogan" Is a poor temporary affair a
1 mere circular hut of logs and stones
with a hole In tho roof for the smoke
and a blanket for tho door. In tho
summer the Navajo woman loves to
move Into a brush wickiup made of
greasewood boughs. There she sets up
I her loom In tho shadow of tho rocks
nnd lives In tho open air all summer.

The Odor of Dentil.
A London physician of large practice
asserts that owing to his extremely
sensitive sense of smell he can foretell
tho coming of death forty-eight hours.
lie says that when a patient comes
.within two days of death a peculiar
earthy smell Is emitted from the body
When tho fatal disease is slow In Its
progress tho odor makes Its nppenr-
ance as much as three days before
hand but when tho disease Is of tho
galloping kind tho doctor says ho re
ceives much shorter warning. lie at
tributes the smell to mortification
which begins within the body beforo
life Is extinct.
Dogs aro thought to have this sense
for hunting hounds havu been observed
to begin a mournful baying a duy or
two before their musters died.

At Ucathfleld In Kugland Is a farm
on which still stand the remains of
an old stone house that is said once to
have been tho homo of tho notorious
Jack Cade. Whether or not Cade ever
lived there can never be accurately de-
termined but there Is no disputing tho
fact that he was killed In that neigh
borhood. On tho main road not far from
tho ruins of tho house stands a uion
ument with this Inscription: "Near this
spot was slain the notorious rebel Jack
Cado by Alexander Idcn Esq. sheriff
of Kent A. D. 1450. Ills body was
carried to London and his head fixed
upon London bridge. This Is tho sue
