Thnt Jet of (lame with Its sinister look-

doomed to perish miserably within n

It was only on Friday afternoon that
residents of Kingstown the cnpltn)
began to gain some Idea of the disas
ter which had befallen the country of
tho Carlbs ns the northern portion of
the Windward coast Is called. George
town Is the center of that onco fertile
and beautiful district now a desolate
wnsle of nshes. Between this town
nnd the capital there Is n fairly good
road running for tho most part along
the sea.
The Journey Is usually performed on
horseback but a mall wagon which
takes passengers plies regularly along
the road. It Is alto jiosslblo to obtain
at times so mo sort of veblclo drawn b
mules nnd It was by ono of these con
veyances that I proccedfil to Oeorge
town on tho day after the eruption.
It Is almost Imposslblo to con y In
writing any Idea of tho desolate np
penranco of the country beyond the
llftecn mile post-that Is fifteen miles
from Kingstown aud soven from
Oeorgetown. Tho wholo placo looked
as it millions of barrels of cement bad
been emptied over the land covering
every inch of ground with n coat of
dismal gray. As wo proceeded I notic-
ed that tho small stones scattered about
wero of larger size uud that the bed of
dust became thicker until wo reached
Georgetown where the streets were
covered to a depth of three feet
It was only when we reached the
center of the town however that we
began to realize tho horrors caused by
that fatal eruption. We passed three
houses from which Micro arose heart
rending walls of suffering. It was In
theso houses that the Injured for few
of whom there was any chance of re
covery were being slowly tortured to
death by the Inexorable hand of na
ture. We hurried on through George-
town to the country beyond where
most of the inhabitants bad perished
Tho first place we got to was the over
seer's house In I.nngley park where
thirty-soven bodies bad been found
They had already been burled but. n

itench was unbearable.
At every step wo encountered fresh
scenes of horror and when wo reached
