It bus been established that no l-ss
than twenty-five women of I'lttsbu.R
were working at one time to save toe
condemned murderers from the gnl-
lows. Mrs. Kato Koffel was the lead
ing spirit of this coterie. Her cowork-

Danger of Pneumonia.
A cold at this time If neglected Is
liable to cause pneumonia which Is so
often fatal and even when tho pa
tient has recovored the lungs nro
weakened making them peculiarly
susceptible to the development of con
sumption. Foley's Honey and Tar will
stop the cough heal and strengthen
the lungs and prevent pneumonia.

Mrs. Soffel met and talked with them.
Soon the scheme to Mive the men
from tl'e gibbet took form. The nuns
pollcif ol money. Mrs. Soffel enlisted
the nld of other women. Members of
8L Vincent do Paul's society at the
cathedral assisted In tho work al-
though In no way pledging the sanc-
tion of the organization Itself.
Letters were written to more than a
score of tho most prominent business
men of Pittsburg. Persecution of the
Hlddlos wns alleged and their Inno
cence of many of the crimes laid at
tbelr doors woh asserted. Not odo of
these letters was ever answered. Not
a cent was added to the sum through
them. Here comes the strangest part
of the story. The leaders of the move
ment turned from the men to tbelr
wlvos. The Intluenco of the Biddies
at once appearwl. livery woman an
swered the appeal nnd one was found
wuo went to tbo governor to pray for
clemency.
It was asserted the other night In
circles of authority thnt this messen-
ger Is of well known family nnd wide
acquaintance In her homo neighbor
hood Oakland.
Sister Inez mother superior of the
Webster avenue convent Issued the
following statement:
"It Is truo that I took an Interest in
the Kiddle brothers believing that
they were not oh bad as they were
palntcO. Money was solicited nmong
friends. All of It was turned over to
their attorneys. None of It went to
the Hlddlc or to Mrs. Soffel."
Women not only gave money to tho
fund for saving tho men but bad
masses said for them. This was es-
tablished ncently. It is almost with-
out parallel in Pittsburgh history.
