THE FIHST AERONAUT
HIS INITIAL FLIGHT INTO SPACE WAS
AT PARIS IN 1783.
IMInlre lc llnalrr Wnn tlio Pioneer
of the I.oiii: Line of DnrliiK Spirit
Wlio lVrlslicil In Their Attempt to
AinlKnte- tlio Air.
Tlio first attempts to make nscen-
kIoiis by means of balloons were made
In I'nrls In the yenr 17S3. IMIntre dos
Hosiers una the first mid most Illustri-
ous of the long list of aeronauts who
have fallen victims to their desire to
advance the art of aerostatics.
In July and August of tho year 1783
balloons filled with hydrogen gas were
sent up from Paris and In September
" at Versailles the first balloon was sent
up freighted with living animals.
In tho same year Montgolfler con-
structcd n. balloon which he claimed
would bo capable of carrying passen-
gers his workshop being In the gardoni
of tho Kaubourg St. Antolne. The bal-
loon was sixty feet In height and forty-
eight broad. Its exterior was richly
painted and embroidered thcro being
represented upon It the twelve signs of
tho zodiac tho arms of tho king of
France and numberless fleurs-de-lis nnd
lower down nmld a crowd of grotesque
heads and garlands of flowers a Hock
of eagles with extended wings that
seemed to be Hying arid supporting the
huge balloon upon their shoulders.
Ilelow tho balloon proper was con-
structed a. circular platform of wicker-
work covered with silk which was
used as a. car. This platform was very
s largo and was surrounded by a balus-
trade to prevent the aeronauts from
falling out. In the center of this plat
form or car was an opening below
which was suspended by chains nn Iron
stove which was to be used for rarefy-
ing the air In the balloon whllo In one
corner was n. magazine Intended for tho
storing up of an Immense quantity of
Btraw which served as fuel.
Pllatn; des Hosiers generally alone
but at one time accompanied by tho
Marquis d'Arlandes and on another oc-
casion by M. Glrond do Vlllette had as-
cended In tho balloon without cutting
tho ropo which held It captive to a
- height of 1290 feet.
Hosiers had much difficulty In obtain-
ing permission from the king to make
an ascent without being held down by
tho rope but consent was at last se-
cured and on tho 20th of November
17S3 everything was made ready. Dur-
ing the day the wind and rain were vio-
lent and It was found necessary to
postpone tlio nscent. The next day the
21st tho weather was more favorable
and at 1:30 In tho afternoon In the pres-
ence of the dauphin and his suit PI-
latre des Hosiers nnd tho Marquis d'Ar-
landes set out together from the .Inr-
dlns do la Muctto upon tho first aerial
voyage ever attempted nnd performed.
Tlio wind was still very rough and the
weather stormy but In spite of these
(disadvantages tho balloon roso rapidly.
) Having passed over Paris and be-
" come free from nil fear of getting en-
tangled among the buildings of the city
the aeronauts suffered themselves to
descend considerably until tliey found
themselves In a fresh current of nlr.
which bore them In a southerly direction.
After proceeding a few miles farther
the fire was allowed to die out and the
balloon descended about five miles from
Paris. When the aeronauts returned to
tho Chateau do la Muette they were
greeted with the utmost enthusiasm by
the assembled crowds. Benjamin Frank-
lin was a witness of tlio whole speeta1
cle and when asked what he thought
of it ho replied "1 have seen a child
born which may one day bo n man."
Aerostatics hud advanced to such a
degree that on the 7th of Jaruary
1785 Blancliard a rival of Hosiers
crossed over tho channel from Dover
to Calais
Hosiers was spurred on by Blanch-
ardV success and set to work con-
atrucdug a balloon which when com-
pleted ho called an neromontgolller.
It consisted of an Immense balloon of
hydrogen gas with a large cylinder
placed under It the use of It being to
rarefy tho air without losing gas.
When a favorable day hud arrived
Pllntre for the last time mudo his
preparations lie was assisted by a
Boulogne physician named Houialn
nnd on June 15 17S5 they stepped into
the basket the ropes were cast off and
the balloon roso with tho utmost maj-
esty from tho earth.
When It had risen nbout 200 feet it
struck a fresh current of air which
took It directly toward the sea. It soon
found another current which rapidly
carried It back again. It possibly mny
liavo been tlio desire of tho aeronauts
to descend to find n more favorable cur-
rent of nlr for while opening the volvo
to let the cold nlr Into his cylinder un-
fortunately a huge rent was made In
the balloon. Tlio consequences were
Immediate and horrible. At that tlino
tlio balloon was 1700 feet ubovo the
surface of tlio earth. A few moments
afterward the two aeronauts lay on
the ground dead nuil horribly muti-
lated. Near tlio spot where Pilatre des Ho-
siers was burled a monument was
erected In 1853 to commemorate the al-
most miraculous crossing of tlio sen by
lllanchard upon the very spot of earth
on which that Intrepid aeronaut de-
scended. He hod become fur France
a hero mid numbers of Inscriptions nrc
still readable. New York Times.
Spool mill Tlirrnil.
Tho spool mills use nbout 82000
cords or 10.000.000 feet or birch an-
nually turning out 800.000.000 spouU
each spool large enough to carry 200
yards of thread. The amount of
thread that could bo wound upon these
800000.000 spools would reach 3000
times nrouud the world at the equator
and leave a little for mending.
