work of digging up bodies of storm
victims in tho suburbs of Galveston
for interment in more appropriate
ground which has been carried on
under the auspices of tbe Woman's
Health Protective Association ba3

order issued today by tbe health
department. Most of tbe remains
thus far exhumed have been in a
state of decomposition tbe flesh
still adhering to the bones. This
was due to the fact that tbe bodies
were deposited in saline matter.
Tbe stench arising from tho graves
opened was o'ffeusive to tbe resi
dents nnd was considered by the
department as very dangerous to
the public health. This work will
not be resumed until cold weather.
ARKANSAS AND CHOCTAW.
Extension will Cross the Frisco Near
Grant In the Territory
Paris Tex. Aug. 14 Capt. J.

mouth of the Kiamitia reports
that tbe Arkansas nnd Choctaw
road is preparing to build right
along up the river on the Territory
side crossing the Frisco in the
vicinity of Grant. Tbe chief en
gineer nnd superintendent of the
road and Gov. Dukes of tho Choc-
taw nation met near Antlers the
other dav and Bettled the Question
of the right of way by the railway
company ngreeing to pay $75 per
mile for it. On Monday the di-
rectors of the road met at Texar-
kann and arranged for tuo issue
and sale of bonds for the immediate
construction of tho road. Many
men with teams aro reported
to be already going over on tbe
ine for work.

Pittsburg Pa. Ang. 14. The
Bteel workers' striko haB uinco its
extended start this week cut off 31
per cent of tbe combined steel and
finished product tonnage of the
United StateB Steel corporation.
The number of tons annually pro
duced by tbe Eteel corporation and
finished material is 14375420 of
which tho striko has cut off 4375-
420 tons. As to labor the

not an Assignment of Funds.
New York Aug. 14. Justice
O'German in a decision just ren
dered holds that the delivery of
check on a bank does not consti
tnte an assignment of the funds in

check and that a person withdraw
ing the amount of his credit in tbe
bank by a Becond check prior
the payment of the first check does
not commit larceny.
Tbe case was that of Dr. Adam
li. btraub who was arrested on a
charge of grand larceny in proceed

him by the firm of Schalke Wan!
tc Wagner brokers. He wos held
by a magistrate to awuit the action
of the grand jury but appealed to
the supreme court on a writ of ha
beas corpus and was discharged
from custody.
Flood in New flexlco.
Santu Fe N. M-. Aug. 14. A
heavy thunderstorm last night
caused another bad waBhout on the
Santa'Fe near Thornton. Pnssen
gers from this city who left last
evening returned and stayed unti
today when it was reported that
tbe washout bad been temporarily
repaired.
On tbe Denver and Itio Grande
a small bridge was also washed out
near the depot but it was repaired
without deloying any trains. When
the storm was at its height tbe
adobe house of Nemecio Armijo
caved in and buried the family of
nine under its debris. All were
more or less hurt but only one a
boy of 12 was fatally injured.

Saturday evening a man was ar
rested on the streets of this city
by Sheriff Painter on the charge of
having murdered the voting son of
