(daiitllng over on tho Canadian Hide
where tho old Hrltl.sh uiuictim used to
be and looking neros tho thought
struck mo how much prettier the falls
would bo If they were not broken by
Goat Islnnil. Then I set to work to
think how tho Improvement could be
inado. When I reached what I believe
Is a feasible plan I made Inquiries
when tho commission woidd meet anil
finding It was to convene on tho fol-
lowing day staid over and attended Its
meeting at the Prospect House.
"Tho commissioners seemed i i'eh
taken with the Idea and wo- Ur d why
no one had ever thought of it before.
They told mo they would have their
engineer llgure on It and make an estl-
mate of tho cost and that they would
correspond with mo regarding tho mat
ter later. For further consideration of
the matter I was referred to Andrew
A. Green of New York."
Asked how much ho estimated tho
cost of tho Improvement would be Mr.
Keofer wild:
"That Is hard to say but I am of tho
opinion It would not run over $50000
or S00.000 which would be a small
prlco to pay for sueli an Improvement
I shall bring tho matter before tho gov'
crnor of New York and through him
again to tho attention of the falls com
mtssloners.
"Tho people ought to be Interested
In this Improvement for it will make a
new falls at Nlngnra. It will stimulate
tho Interest of thoio who have never
seen tho falls before while those who
havo seen them will be anxious to
como again to see what has been done
to preserve and Improve one of the
greatest American wonders."
Mr. Keefer already enjoys distinction
of being the man who raised tho first
American Hag In Alaska. lie Is also a
cousin of General Georgo Washington.

Brown on trial for conspiracy to
defraud insurance companies
through the dentil of Miss Maggie
DelTenbach were this evening
found guilty nnd Bontenced to
the penitentiary. Frank II. Smi-
ley indicted with Ungor and
Brown pleaded guilty nnd turned
state's evidence. It is likely that
he will escape with n light sen
tence.
The evidenco in tho enso showed
that I'nger Brown and Smiley
nnd Miss Deffenbnch entered into
a conspiracy by which Smiley was
to appear as the nfllnuced husband
of the womnti. She was to bo ill
nnd apparently die leaving him
tho insurance which included one
policy iu a stock company nnd two
in fraternal organizations the to-
tal aggregating $25 000. Tho wo-
man iu her will said that she do-
sired that her remains be cremated
and it is supposed that it was the
intention to hurry her nwny after
the supposed death and cremate
another body procured from a
hospital.
Tho woman became sick accord
ing to the program but did uot
rally nud died. Her body was at
once cremnted. An inquest was
held by Assistant Coroner John B.
Weckler without a jury nnd
Weckler returned to tho coroner's
office nnd a verdict that tho woman
had died of natural causes was re-
turned The death of tho woman
is shrouded in mystery nnd physi
cians on the stand differed widely
ns to the cause of death. The
state however declared that the
woman was murdered although it
could not be positively proven. It
was shown that all tho insurance
carried by the woman was assigned
before her death and that tho will
wns drawn up after theso assign
ments had been mnde. The will
had no effect save iu tho clause
touching cremation and it is be-
lieved by the stnte that the will
wns prepared only to facilitate tho
position of tho body of tho womau.
