tor educating children of all classes
of people now s residing in the
Cherokee nation make it necessary
to establish a system of common
schools within the bounds of the
Cherokee nation tor such purposes.
And to that end it is agreed that
all echo(4 property now belonging
tit the Cherokeee nation shall be
pluced under the control ot the
secretary of the interior together
with all schools now in operation
under Cherokee laws and that he
be authorized to appoint a board
of education cmupoxed of three
members two ixf iliein upon the
recommendation f the principal
chief who shall under the direc-
tion and control ef the secretary of
the interior haw the immediate
charge and management of euch
schools and the custody jf said
property. Heiihall have further
authority to -erect other school
houses and estcblinh school there-
in in communities where schools
are not already being conducted by
the Cherokeee and to do all things
else necessary for the establish-
ment and suc.-HHsful operation rtf

becomes a part of a state all lands
and buildings herein reserved for
school purposes belonging to the
Cherokees -shall be sold tinder the
direction of the secretary of the
interior and all invested funds for
orphan arrd school purposes shall
be capitalized and added to the
proceeds of said property and all
wsch funfis shall be paitiper capita
to the citizens of the Cherokee na-
tion their descendants. -
50. "Said board of education
hall keep said institutions in
good repair and insured for which
purposes any surplus money be-
longing to the respective funds
may be used.
61. The school system herein
provided shall not into effect
until the United States has made
nececpary appropriations therefor
and in no event until after the first
day cf July 1S99.
