SUPPORT THE CONVENTION.
The reports from Guthrie are conflicting. One day
the convention is certain to take this course; the next a
course directly opposite. Very little can be predicted
in advance. In some quarters too there Is a disposition
to criticise the convention at every opportunity. Of
such a course The Chieftain heartily disapproves. The
convention represents now not the Democratic party
but the people of the whole new state and It should
have the encouragement of all.
After the constitution lias been written If it repre-
sents the special interests rather than the entire people
it will be time for the latter to express t heir disapprov-
al. Now everyone should do everything in his power to
hold the convention to a sense of its high mission and
constitution that will stanr

a uniform prohibition law for the entire state and a pro-
vision giving the state the power which tfeed not be
used If It is found unneccs ary to engage In any business
whatever if It is found necessary to do so In order to
break the power of monopoly.
If the Democratic party gives the people a constitu-
tion embodying those provisions The Chieftain for'one
Is going to be heartily In favor of lis adoption and will
move a vote of thanks to the Democratic party.
And if the constitution does not conta'n those pro
visions the makers of It had better prepare their cy
clone cellars in advance.

MAY HE ABLE TO BEAR IT.
An old abolitionist and veteran of the civil war sent
south by some Chicago negro-protecttonlsts to make are-
port on the president's discharge of the three negro
companies for the disgraceful riot at Brownsville Texas
in which one citizen was wantonly killed and several
others Injured says that the president did exactly right;
that the neeroes were wholly to blame and deserved
worse punishment than they received. And in view of
this impartial testimony it is just possible that the
president will be able to bear up even under the weight
of the condemnation of the negro press association of
Oklahoma.
