The working principle of tL" motor
which ha given the automobile thU
wonderful new lite i roughly Uw
prinelple of the rifle aaya the Amer-
ica!. Illuatmted Magazine. The charge
of gaa la the equivalent of the gun-
powder and the pleton ia the bullet;
the gaa la exploded and the put on file
forward and the piaton rod delivers iU
motion to the crank shaft of the steam
engine. In the steam engine the
steam works against both sides of til
piston; in two revolutions of the By-
wheel the steam preases against Una
piston four times. In the explosion
engine according to the prevailing
syatem the gaa operates against only
one side of the piston (the end of the
cylinder through which the piston rod
works Is completely open) and there
is an explosion but once in two revo
lutions of the flywheel that la thers
Is but a single explosion to four move-
ments of the piston. Those four move-
ments are the power stroke (caused
by the explosion In the cylinder)
which supplies the energy to drive tha
automobile and the force required to
complete the three non-power strokes;
second a backward stroke which
pushes the exploded gases out of the
chamber through a valvo which opens
for this purpose third a forward
stroke which sucks the charge of gas
into the chamber through an Inlet
valve and fourth a backward stroke
which compresses the gaa for com-
pression Is necessary to secure the best
energy of the gaa. The fifth stroke la
the first stroke over again the gas ex-
plodes and the piston shoots bulletllk
forward.

TO KEEP FLOWERS FRESH.
A Ely Boom la Bad for Both Poaie
and Persons and the Former Will
Fade Quicker in the Ugh t.
Flowers keep longest in a bouea
heated by hot-water pipes and wlthoi
most quickly in a furnace-heated
apartment the dry air parching them
as quickly as the midsummer sun.
The atmosphere of a furnace-heated
room may however be materially tem-
pered by placing a pan of water on or
near the register a precaution by the
way as beneficial to the residents as
to the flowers or plants.
After the flowers have been used in
the reception room or on the dinner
table put them away in a cool room;
not cold btit at a temperature of 40 to
60 degrees.
A cool cellar Is an excellent place
for flower keeping but if there Is no
room or collar available an Ice box
will answer the purpose. Lilies of the
valley may ho wrapped in bunches in
white waxed (really oiled) paper and
laid away without water. Hyacinths
narelssl Jonquils and other bulb flow-
era sometimes keep for many days
when drapped In wax paper and laid
away dry; then before using place
thorn in a vase of cool (not cold) wa-
ter and even if withered they will
often revive and for a few hours wlD
seem nearly as fresh as when newls
cut.
With regard to its keeping qualities
the carnation Is peculiar. There are
now several hundred varieties known
to tho florists many however differ-
ing from each other so slightly as t
puzzle even the experts to distinguish
them. It often happens however thai
of twp varieties having very nearly
the same color or shade one will keep
for many days and the other for only
a few hours. While there are many
exceptions the white carnations kee(
better than the colored varieties and
the pinks bettor than the reds al-
though there are one or two crimson
or pink varieties which keep as well
as the whites and one or two whites
that will not keep at all. If it is de
slrable to keep them they may be
placed In vases so that three of four
inches of tha stems are immersed
j hen place them in an ice box cellar
or closet for all flowers keep bettot

A pinch of salt dissolved in th
water Is believed by many persons to
aid in the keeping process. RoBes and

florists call them may he treated Ilka

American direction Is fully carried
into effect the transactions will be-

ALL GIVE THANKS
TO CUTiCURA REMEDIES
"My wife had eczema for five or six
years. It was on her face and would
come and go. We had read so mucn
about Cuticura Remedies that we
thought we would give them a trial.
We did so and it has now been about
four years and she has never had a sign
of eczema since. She also used them
both about a year ago for her scalp.
She had very thin hair and Cuticura
helped her hair greatly. I myself
used Cuticura Soap and Cuticura Oint-
ment some time ago for falling hair. I
now have a verv heavy head of hair and
it does not fail out. We used Cuti-
cura Remedies for our baby who was
nearly bald when young. 8ne has very
nice hair now. Sne ia very fleshy and
we had so much trouble with heat that
we would bathe her with Cuticura Soap
and then apply Cuticura Ointment it
would dry the heat up so much quicker
than anything else. We give thanks to
the Cuticura Remedies. Mr. H. B.
