Yucatan's. Water Cvern.
Slnca Yucatan where the Maya
built their strange cities ia of coral!
limestone formation it follows that Itl
would have been a desert but for its
subterranean rivers and the cenotesj
or water caverns which give access to
them. The Mayas noted the courses.'
of the underground streams and built'
their towns round the cenotes. Many
cenotes are now found surrounded by
ruins and give indication of the methJ
ods employed by the Mayas to reach1
their cool waters. In Urinal a cenote
about 40 feet deep is Inhabited by a
peculiar species of fish. At Bolanchen
there is a cenote having five openings
in the rocks at the bottom of the cay-
ern. Ladders made by tying v tree
trunks together lead down a total dis-
tance o 1400 feet but the perpendi-
cular depth from the surface to the
water is not more than 500 feet. Har-

Olympian Holdup.
Mars had mislaid his helmet and
was getting irritable. "Confound it'
he cried "what's become of that hatf
"Perhaps Jove took it when he went
out for a smoke" suggested Minerva.
"Nothing of the sort" snarled Mars.
"The old man wears a size 8 halo.
That steel box of mine would break
his neck. Where is my hat?" At
that moment Ganymede in a brand
new livery was seen approaching. In
one hand he carried t'he missing hel-
met. The other hand was outstretch-
ed with the palm uppermost. Mars
stared at Ganymede and then at the
helmet. "Jumping thunderbolts!" he
oared. 'Has the hat-tip-trust reach-
ed Olympus?" And rudely flinging a
silver skedoolian at the boy he snatch-
ed away the helmet and went clatter-
ing down the nail Cleveland Plain-Dealer.
