A sneak thief entered the residence
of J T. Ratcliff last night about 6:30
or 7 o'clock and carried away a cloak
and some other articles of wearing
apparel. Mr. llateliff was in the
back yard and Mrs. Ratcliff was In
the kitchen and heard someone enter
at the front door and a little later
saw a man with a light overcoat on
pass out. A search was made but the
thief had gotten beyond view and an

Mrs A. T. jiones. of 92 Hayes street. San
Francisco. Cat. writes: "As a child I was
delicate and ereat caro was taken of me
because some of my relatives had died of
consumption although my father and mother
were healthy. 1 grew up with only the or-
dinary diseases of all children but about
two years ago I contracted a severe cold
which would not yield to such home-treatment
as was handy. Doctors were tried but
after threo months of this treatment I was
only worse. Then I was advised to try Dr.
Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery and am
glad to say that three bottles not only cured
me of the cold and cough but made me feel
better than I cterhad before. 1 will always
have a bottle of this medlcino in the house."

Cutting Metals with Oxygen.
Diamond may cut diamond but oxy-
gen cuts metal. The apparatus consists
essentially of a tube with two brandels
terminating In blowpipes moved along
a guide In front of the metal plates or
part to be cut at the rate of about six
inches per minute. One of the blow-
pipes delivers an oxyhydrogen flame
which raises the metal where it is to bo
cut to a temperature corresponding
with dark red. The following blowpipe
delivers a jet of pure oxygen which en
ters into combustion with the hot met-
al thus producing a clear channel like
a saw-cut about one-eighth inch thick
the remainder of the metal being unaf-
fected by the operation. Jewelers' Cir-
cular Weekly.
Island Banks as Ship.
The island of Ascension In the At-
lantic is the property of the British ad-
miralty authorities and Is borne on the
navy list as a vessel being classed as
a tender to one of his majesty's ships of
war. The island is governed by a naval
captain and the men stationed there
(chiefly royal marines) are subject to
the same rules as they would be on board
ship. There is no private property in
land so there are no rents rates or
taxes.
