Three New Picture I'mmo.
A novelty in small frames for photo-
graphs Is the architectural frame. This
is made up of two Roman or Corin-
thian columns for the sides surmount-
ed by a lintel the whole resting on
what appears to be a doorstep. . The
Roman column Is the favorite and is
finished In deep green or black. Deli-
cate -ater colors In figures are popu-
lar framed in a tiny oval gold bead-
ing with a wide mat of deep red. An-
other style of picture which takes a
dark red maj well is the black and
white print of famous drawings. ' The
red seems to throw out In relief the
details of the drawings. The tiniest
narrow black wood frame is tbe best
finish. New York World.
VentUation of Booms.
Except in foggy or very severe
weather the bedroom windows should
be open a little bit at the top during
the night. Warm air (that which is
given out in breathing) always rises.
If the top of the window is not open
it cannot escape and so it is breathed
back again Into the lungs and is preju-
dicial to health. Before leaving tne
room in. the morning the window and
door should be thrown open for an
hour or so. Spread the bed clothes
near the open window and allow the
fresh air to play upon the bed cov-
erings. The foul air and carbonic gas
will thus escape from the clothes and
consequently rest taken in them will
be healthy rest
Wonderful Cornstalk.
Six different commodities are new
being manufactured from cornstalks
namely cellulose worth $400 a ton
used by the government as an auto-
matic hole-stopjper for battleships; ex-
cellent cardboard a" fine grade of pa-
per an uneqnaled foundation for dyna-
mite a patent cattle food and a supe-
rior glue. The value of the cellulose
lining for warships is well known.
When a leak develops the cellulose
swells in such a manner as to auto-
matically close It With fifteen tons
of stalks worth $90 one. ton of such
cellulose Is made for which as already
stated the government Is now paying
at the rate of $400 a ton.
Aatt-Epldemle Club.
A club is now being formed In Paris
the members of which swear never to
shake hands with any one unless they
are wearing gloves. Many members of
the aristocracy have shown their will-
ingness to support the organization
and a fine Is to be Imposed upon all
members who are caught shaking
hands without gloves. The formation
of this curious club Is undoubtedly the
outcome of a recent discussion in a
French medical Journal. This paper
endeavored to show that disease has
occasionally been contracted by shak-
ing hands without gloves.
The Potato Crop.
Of all the staple crops In the world
the potato takes the first place the an-
nual crop being more than 4000000000
bushels against 2500000000 bushels of
wheat and 2600000000 bushels pf
corn. Of the total potato crop Europe
produces fully seven-eighths and one-
half times as much as her wheat and
all the cereals together" are but 50 per
cent jnore.
TAUd-Klfht-Awn-HIada.
By the laws of St Edward the Con-
fessor if any man lie a third night in
