Delayed by a Wreck.
The Frisco passenger train due here
at 9:44 a. m. did not arrive till 6:30 p.

by the train striking a stock train on
the siding at Knob View above

stock and placing tbem in such a
position that the track was blockaded
several hours. Two head of cattle
were killed but no persous injured.
Amusements.
Gorton's Big White miustrels are
coming with an avalanche of burnt
cork merry makers producing a brand
new 1898-99 program artistic and re-
fined. This company is catering 'to
the public for the lead in minstreli-y
and has already made rapid strides in
that direction. The press of our lead-
ing cities afford to them general
praise in presenting a novel and va-
ried clean and elegantentertainment
their long list of prominent- miustrel
artists is an evidence of this fact.

mental or vocal color system.
The Play.
Last night at the opera house
Hoyt's Comedy Co. presented "In
Old Kentucky." The performance in
every particular was good. Miss Ger-
trude Hilliker as Madge gave a clever
performance of a difficult part. Mr.
Raymond as Col. Saudusky Doolittle
And Mr. Hubbard as Ned In the com-
edy characters as usual made a big
bit. Tonight Hoyt's famous play "A
Texu Steer" will be the bill. This
play U too well known for any com-
ments suffice to say it is the master-
piece of the master of sarcasm. Mr.
Hubbard will play "Fishback" the
colored politician Mr. Raymond "Ma-
jor Ten." New and up-to-date spec-

Troubles of Our Own.
The Daily Chieftain Is after bus
iness all right but seriously object
to life long residents of Vinita taking
our placeof business for livery stables
blacksmith shops grocery stores and
the doctor's office. Notlqng since one
of our leading attorneys called up the
oflice and requested that the white
pony be sent up immediately. Now
the only "pony" that interests the
boy who is paid for answering the
telephone is that product of Papsthei-
scr and Shlitzenbush; and be so in
formed the gentleman who at once
went Into a towering rage broke up
the telephone and said plea-ant things
about wrong numbers telephon
people etc.
Next came a lady who wanted to
know what good butter was worth
and when told by the telephone boy
that he did not know she expressed
her opinion of a grocery cierk who did
not have brains enough to keep up
with the market price of butter in
very forcible and eloqueut terms.
On top of this our telephone boy
has been asked a thousand hard queS'
tions such as: "How is the .iorth
bound train?" "Have you any fresh
eggs?" "Can you send me up a ton of
coal at once?" "Please have the doc
tor call at our house immediately" etc
Today however was reserved for
the crushing blow. First a gentle
man called for his horse-but the boy
refused to accommodate him. Then
a man unknown wanted to know if
he could come in and repair the beam
of his sod plow. It was more than
poor weak boy could stgnd; he tried to
explain to the gentleman that he was
talking to a representative of
The Daily Chieftain but it was
of no use. Finally the man-
of-the-plow got mad and in an I'll
break-your-neck voice informed the
boy that he knew wtiat he wanted
and where to get it saying also that
The Chieftain force were all black
smiths anyway.
The poor boy went out in the work
room and asked the printers what it
all meant explaining the conversa
tion as it occurred. Now the entire
printaorial force is on the war path
and woe to the man-of-the-plow if he
falls into their hands.
