of agricultural products espeolally of
cereals. Ho assorts that without lgnor

ouonoinio legislation of the last session
of Congress has dlreotly bunoQtod the

tai ho V! loves boiii largely due to the
silver legislation which moreover has
lessoned the influence of Uussla and
India America's wheat competitors In
liritish markets.
Tho increasud export trade In cattle
and animal products another causo of
congiatulat on Mr. Kusif tracos to the
energetic and oltect'.vo measures adopt-
ed for the eradication of pleuro-pneu-monia
and to the growing appreciation
at homo and abroad of the depart-
ment's ability lo suppress or effect-
ually control contagious animal dis-
eases. In the lino of further pre-
caution tho department is now pre-
pared to carry out inspection of export
caltlo before shipment provided for by
tho act of August 80. Similar energy
lias been directed to tbe pork interests
tho department having" already under-
taken tho inspection called for by tho
same act. The Secretary strongly rec-
ommends an inspection still more coni-
prchens vo of all animalsslaughtorod (or
Inter-Mate or foreign trado. Tho pres-
ent immunity of Northorn cattle from
Texas fever he believes to be due to a
genera' compliance with tho regulations
of tho department issued last spring.
The outlook for a homo sugar indus-
try is considered favorable. Tho Secre-
tary predicts that in tho near future
half of the sugar will ho thus supplied
from the sugar beot. In the provisions
of the tariff b 11 ho finds what ho re-
gards as somo glaring inconsistencies
in that it gives ontiro control of sugar
manufacturing and bounty payments to
a subordinate otllcer of the Treasury
Department in spite of the fact that
heretofore tho Department of Agricult-
uro has been charged with the general
supervision of tho sutrar industry both
in its culture and manufacturing phases.
The production of raw silk as an in
digenous industry is reforred to in-not
very encouraging term though Its Im-
portance is emphasized by reference to
tho imports of raw silk which have
largely increased during the year and
are valued for tho year at upward of
fJ4000000 but tho necessity for favor-
able legislation as well as for improve-
ments in machinery is insisted upon.
He also believes that the recent changes
in tho tariff on linens will servo to en-
courage manufacturers to provide a
market for home grown flax.
The possibility of serving the corn
growers throughout the country by ex-
tending the market for Indian corn in
foroign countries has engaged the Sec-
retary's attention with the result that
he has appointed a special agentabroad
having special qualifications for th's
duty to invosUuato and report upon
the possibilities of promoting tho con-
sumption of Indian corn in Kuropean
countries.
Tho frequent occurrence of important
international agricultural gatherings is
mentioned and tho fact is pointed out
that at these tho I'nikd States the
greatest agricultural country in the
world is most frequently conspicuous
by its absence.

There was an air of giulnens at tho
Uuiou Depot and In tho ulllccs tiloiiir
Union avenue as the above word passed
among tho oNlolul. Who was tho sol
dior who had so many friends? It was
not "tho soldier" nor "a soldier" but
plain "Soldier" and ho was only a dog
a little black follow who had for yoars
been a familiar character around tho
depot Everybody was his friend not
only for his own sake but on account
of the history of his eventful life which
could ho but huvo been ablo to talk
would havo added an i.tterestlng page
to Western history.
One day some eleven years ago an old
soldier got oil an east-hound Ira n lio
had boon wounded and was on his way
home on a furlough but was taken s ck
here and sent to a hospital where ho
only lived two or three days. With him
when ho arrived here was a llt'.lo black
dog which ho said hid been his eon'
slant com pin Ion on tho plains and as
he was in Oeneral Terry s command
when they went or were supposed to
have gone to brave Custer's relief at
i tho timo of tho Llttlo II g Horn slaujh
' ter thecanino passed all through that
remarkable campaign.
When tho man was taken to the hos
pttal tho dog rema ned at tho depot
and for days wandered over the tracks
under the cars and up and down Union
avenue hunting for his master who be-
fore this had gone to await tho
final buglo call. At last he lo'
cated in tho Union Paclilo ticket

! "Soldier" evidently appreciated his
1 new home as ho made it bis headquur-

which occurred from old age. For sev-
oral years no matter what tho weather
"Soldier" would go down to the Union
Depot where ho would make tho rounds
of the building and also tho ofllcei
along tho avenue thon ho would return
to Mr. Shaw's homo for the day. He
was stolon once and taken to Denver
but escaped from his captor and after
months of absence turned up foot-sore
and almost exhausted. Not long after
hs aga.n disappeared aud was not soon
for ovor a year when ono day he

borne and tho ladies nursed him for
several weeks until ho recovered. After
that exploit "Soldier" lived a quiet life
until his"doath. Kansas City Times.
Klertlon Notes.
Pattison's plurality is 1728.
Unofficial returns from all counties
in Iowa give Mcl'arland (Rep.) for Sec-
retary of State 85l majority.
General John U Clark of Missouri
announces himself as a candidate for
the clerk of tbe next National House.
It i believed that the Democratic
plurality in IifUana will figure out
about 18000.
Returns from eighty-five out of the
eighty-nine counties in Nebraska indi-
cate the election of Doyd (Dem.) for Gov-
ernor by about 1000 plurality over the
Alliance candidate.
The latest returns indicate the elec-
tion of a Republican Legislature in
South Dakota insuring the re-election
of Senator Moody. The Republicans
swept the State but by reduced plural-
ities. The people gave Pierre from
8.000 to 10000 majority for permanent
capital although Huron is slow to con-
cede tho fact
One county is yet to be heard from in
Congressman Heard's district but in
the ten counties heard from Heard bas
a plurality of 7750 a gain of nearly
4100 over two years ago.
Congressman Mills bat announced
himself a candidate for Speaker.
Johnson (Rep.) for Congress in North
Dakota bas an apparent plurality of
000 but Uenton ihe Democratic candi-
date announces bis intention to contest.
Tbe plurality of Merrism (Rep.) for
Governor of Minnesota will likely fall
litt'.e short of lo00. The rmocrats
elected only Auditor.
