Among the world-wide expres-
sions of a common sorrow at the
assassination of President McKin-
ley that of Wm. J. Bryan reaches
the heights and is worthy of one
of the great men of the times. In
concluding an address at the mem-

Bryan said:

Xot long ago in one of the vaults
of a Lombard street banking house
an old box was found which had
been in the bank since 1756. When
opened it was found to contain bun
dies of exchequer tallies with aeconv
panying documents and dating from
1706
' These tallies (from tailler to cut)
were part of a system which carries
ns back to some of the oldest rec
ords of our country for the Nor
mans claim that they gave us the
name and thing called the exchequer
nnd an ancient building at Rouen
.bears the inscription: Le pore de
3'Kxehiquier a Londres." In Xorman
times the court of exchequer was di-
vided into the uppei- and the lower
or the court of account nnd the court
of the exchequer and it was in the
latter that tallies were used as checks.
In those days and as has been said
down to the past century the mode oi
keeping accounts was for the buyer
and seller to be provided cneh with a
'tally" having n series of notches cor-
responding to the number or quantity
of goods delivered or to what was
due between debtor anil creditor the
teller or creditor keeping one stick
and the purchaser or debtor theother.
The tally used was a square seasoned
rod of hazel or willow and was notched
on one side the size of the Indenta
tiorrs corresponding with the amount
of the Bum denoted. On two other
sides opposite to one another were
inscrfbed the sum paid (in Roman fig
ures) the name of the payer and the
date of the transaction. The rod so
marked was then split dqwn the mid
dle producing two exactly similar
pltces one of which the stock or t ally
(hence our term "stocks") was given
to the payer; the other the counter
stock or counter tally rTunining in
the exchequer. When the dlt was dis-
charged stock and counter ftock were
tied up together. The particular in-
terest of many of the Lombard street
bankers' tallies which we Illustrate

the bank) is that the sets are in many

relic of the ready reckoning of our an-
