A SERMON" IN A PARAGRAPH.
"You have ho enemies? Then you never daredstami
up for right against wrong: ; you have never protected
the weak against the bully; you have never dared defend
your own rights against oppression. Had you done tlie.se
things you would have made enemies. Even if you have
tlone'none of these things but simply achieved a little
nore success la your business thau did your neighbor
you would have an enemy for failure always hates sue-
eess. The man who has no enemies should be ashamed
of it." Eagle.
The Eagle is eminently correct in its conclusion.
The greatest tribute to success is the snarling howl of
the human coyotes who themselves admitted failures
seek to tear dowa any man passing them in the race of
life. To have no good enemies is to hare no good friends.
One of the penalties every man who does things in this
country must expect to pay is the penalty of having the
ill will of the narrow-minded petty puny misanthrops
who have the energy of the jelly fish the intelligence of
Uie parrot the backbone of the angle worm the influ-
ence of the scandal mouger and the character of the
Meket-of-leave man. The enmity of such a herd Is a
standing testimonial to strength of character strong
personality energy enterprise and ambition. Pheonix.
The average population of the United States is
twenty-one persons to the square mile. The average
population of the proposed new state of Oklahoma and
Indian Territory are approximately as densely populated
as Minnesota Arkansas or Maine.
Oklahoma's population in the last ten years increased
10(10 per cent. With statehood in force people familiar
with the conditions in the two territories believe it will
lie 2000 per cent in the next decade.
The density of popnlation in the proixwed new state
of Arizona is 2.68 per square mile. These territories
have more people in proportion to area than either the
states of Nevada Montana Idaho or Wyoming. But up
in Massachusetts people live 304 to the square mile
and this is the greatest density in the United States
excepting only the city of Washington.
The idea of a resident of Vinita suggesting the beau
tifylng of Bull Creek vicinity is a good one and one that
has the Chieftain's hearty indorsement. Why could uot
the Downingville Gas and Oil Co. with its magnificent
artesian well in conjunction with other property owners
along Hull Creek plat the ground build a dam in the
vicinity of the stone crossing and make a most beautiful
lake in a natural basin ( Bull Creek ) ? Driveways could
be constructed around the lake and building sites located
that would bo most beautiful. The cost would not be
great probably not more than 1600 and the change would
add greatly to the value of surrounding property and the
beauty of Vinita.
The be-st waterworks and sewerage system in the
Southwest is the way they all report it.
The cost of our splendid system of waterworks and
sewerage is coming back already in the way of reduced in-
surance rates.
Now let's agitate the matter of sidewalks.
Life and property were never safer uor business bet-
ter than right now in Vinita.

Digests What You Eat
The empress consort of the Emperor
Yung ho of the Ming dynasty in A. D.
1405 committed to paper her thoughts
on the behavior of women under tbe
title of "Instructions for tbe Inner
Apartments" i. e. for women. These
are arranged under 20 headings says
the Nineteenth Century with an addi-
tional chapter on the education of girls.
The empress lays much stress on gentle-
ness good temper economy kind treat-
ment of the young and of relatives but
thinks that Bpeech unrestrained is the
real rock upon which most women split.
"If your mouth Is like a closed door
your words will become proverbial; but
If It is like a running tap no heed will
be paid to what you say."
In her additional chapter ou educa-
tion which is really a more or less dog-
gerel poem of about 350 lines our au-
thoress will be considered very disap-
pointing by some. So far from pleading
for higher education for Chinese women
ttlie urges only that a girl's governess
should teach her pupil to practice filial
piety virtue propriety deportment
good manners and domestic duties as a
preparation for her entry into married
life. Then if she has no children to
continue the ancestral line she is not
to show Jealousy but rather satisfaction
If her husband takes a subordinate wire.
Supposing that he dies before her she
will be left like earth without it heaven
and must transfer her dependence to her
son and summon up her resolution to
face widowhood utitll death. Mount
T'al may crumble way or she may have
to walk over sharp-edged swords but
this resolve must not pasa from her.
Kxamples are given of heroines of ail
ages who have died by hanging or
drowning themselves rather than vio-
late their marriage vow:
"Their bodlee indeed suffered Injury
in life but their names will be fragrant
for ll.nno generations."

Girls as Gardeners.
While agriculture and horticulture
are comparatively new occupations for
women in thl country the sweet girl
tardener Is quite a matter of course In
Kngland. A graduate of Lady Henry
Somerset's farm colony has charge of
all its horticultural work. Another
superintends the laying out of gardens
under the direction of the London Pub-
lic Garden association. In 3SD3 the
gold medal of the Royal Horticultural
society was bestowed upon a woman
who was then employed in Kew gar-
