BLOODY BATTLE

NEAR COLLINSVILLE
The Fight Started and When the
Lat Shot Was Fired all of

Either Killed or
Wounded.
A feud of loDg standing bttween
Skidmore the Oolagah cat-
man and a cattleman named May-
field came to a tragic ending near
CollhiBviMe Saturday afternoon
when the men eecli accompanied
by a fmnd met on the road and
f iipngtd in a desperate battle.
kidmore wac t-hot through the
breset tustainirg a mortal injury
a man uaimd Thillipp who ac-
companied Mayfield was instant-
ly killed and Mayfield and the
companion ol Skidmore were both
eeriously wounded.
It was late iu the afternoon
when Skidmore cccompanied by a
cowboy left Collineville for
Oolagah.
A few miles weet cl town they
encountered ;MayfiiJd and Tbil-
lipp awaitiDg them by the road-
lide. All ol thejmen were beavi
ly armed and were apparently ex-
pecting trouble.
Ai Skidniore approached May-
field raif edhis thot pun end firing
cent a ciarge of buckshot ttaricg
through the right breast of Skid-
more. As the wounded man reeled
from the saddle he turned his gun
on Phillips who was about to fire
at him and sent the contents of
his gun crashing through his brain
killing him instantly.
The companion of Skidmore and
Mayfield turned their guns on each
other eimultaneouely and both
went down seriously wounded. A
moment later and they fired again
both ehots taking effect.
Fearing trouble between the
men a party of triends had fol-
lowed them from Collinmlie and
arrired on the heene in time to
prevent the wounded men from
finishing their desperate work.
The wounded men and the
body of -Phillip? were taken into
Colli ne'vill and medical aid sum-
moned. The phypicians pronounced the
wound of Skidmore fatsl and
both ol the other men are in a
critical condition.
The trouble between the men
dtes back to a coumii'pp ioner'f
trial in which Skidmore testified
against Mayfield and their friend?
hate expected trouble between
them.
