FIRST TERRITORY COURTS.
.Nearly ten years ago the first
United Stales court ever held in
Vinita opened in the room adjoin-
ing The Chieftain office. It was
United States commissioner's
court and Judge Charles II. Mason
was the judge. The only U. 9.
court the people of the country
had ever known was Judge I. C.
Parker's '..great t criminal court at
Fort Smith where 85 men had
been executed by one hangman
and therefore the terror created
when the court set up in our
aoidst m a y be imagined.
However the jurisdiction of the
first Indian Territory courts was
limited and were gradually given
authority to try all manner of cas-
es both civil and criminal. When
Judge Shackleford was judge of
all the Indian Territory embracing
Oklahoma as it did at that time
Col. Tom Needles now of the
Dawes commission was United
States marshal for the whole terri
tory. With its four federal judges
and jurisdiction restricted o the
Ihree districts of the five tribes
and the perfect court machinery
sow in use the territory has been
transformed into a law-abiding
Traceable community.

Choctaw route make direct connection

and southeast.

ESTABLISHED IN 1892.
It has been the remark of The
Chieftain repeatedly that is safest
to buy goods from the home mer-
chants rather than the strolling
jrresponsible peddler. The wares
f the wandering salesman of some
anknown firm away off in the city
may seem marvellously cheap
but generally in the end the cost
is considerably above that for
which the goods could be obtained
from tbe home man. Then the
iome merchant would not attempt
to raise your check or keep back
a sack of sugar or some other arti-
cle you have paid for and if he
did you have your recourse. Then
if you should want a favor in tbe
way of credit for a few days you
would not think of the itinerant
uleeman but your home mer-
chant could and would carry you.
Therefore the average citizen owes
it to his town as well as-himself
Jo Fpend his cah at home. Let
ihe nomadic vender of dry goods
and groceries alone and give your
uineF3 to your home people
here it belong? and you will not
teed tbe protection of the courts.
