An audienoe of about one bnadred
was present yesterday afternoon to hear
Or. Sargent s fourth lecture on "Kxer-sise-How
and When to Take It" The
ieoturer began with a few remarks ex-
planatory of the waste and renewal of
muscular tissues and of its dependence
upon the amount of exertion both
physical and mental to which the
human frame is subjected. The best
result is obtained from exercise when
the body is in a state of perspiration as
then the blood is rushing more rapidly
through tbe veins tbe act on ot tne
heart is t uiuter at d the energy devel-
oped is more intense. Care ruou'd be
taken not to use too heavy dumb-Hells
and weights aa the good which would
otherw'se be derivea is counterbalanced
by the exieuditure of vital energy and
the general clogging up of the system.
Suppose a man were to bold his arm in
a horizontal position for fifteen minute i
or half an hour; gradually tbe action
becomes tedious and painful and sharp
pains go shooting through it This is
Cflused by the checking of the circula-
tion and although the eflort made is
ten timed that of raising a dumbbell
still the tissue lost in the first movement
is not renewed as it i in tho second
and consequently not so much benefit is
derived from it as from the latter. It
is of prime importance to use welghU
proportioned to one's strength neither
too large nor too small but of medium
lite.
Dr. Sargent said that the idea prev-
alent that thestronge-t men eosne from
the country is un erroneous one as
although certain bones and muscles of
those accustomed to manual labor are
larger and stronger yet the develop
uient of tbe heart and lungs does not
correspond and therefore the excels of
energy in one direction is oil set by the
loss in another. Neither do the beit
physique come from the city but in
general from the large towns where
the advantages of pure air out door
ficedom. and the absenoe of severe
mannal labor are combined. In this
connection he remarked that for a coi
lege stuilentof the present day to spen I
his summer va ation working on a farm
during baying and harvesting end all
tha time subjecting a body unaccustomed
to this sort of work to a continued
strain was In the highest degree injuri-
ous as although our forefathers may
have i'one it with impunity the physi-
cal power of Ihe student of Ihe p esent
generation do not compare with those
of the student ot the former. In regard
to the best time for exorcise. Dr. Sar-
gent said that it depended to a cer-
tain extent upon the condition and re-
quirement of a person: if. for instance.
one wa troubled with sleeplessness the
E roper time was in the evening but the
our of the day when the average per
son can best exercise to advantage is
about the middle of the forenoon as
then the vital energy is at its height
and more work can be done ! oth physi
cal and mental. The nest best time for
exercising ia tha afternoon from four
to six and the worst time of all the
earlv morning before breakfast The
custom in the rural districts ot rising
abaut four a. m. and working several
hours be 'ore breakfast especially when
but a I'gbt supper is taken tbe a ght be
fore is in tbe doctor's opinion simply
barbarous as lne bony la in the very
worst condition noaaiu'e. Dttr nt his
college course he wai one of the mem
bers of a boat crew which while In
tra ning. wat accustomed to ruu six
miles before breakfast and tha break-
ing up of ihe constitutions of two of the
mea was attributed to this barbarous
feature of their work. Warrant Paily

a'arming condition of the death-rate in
Saa Francisco and the prttvaJenct of
diphtheria reeoived aome hint oa the
chief cause of infection which under
existing circums lancet are almost re-
markable. Tbe physician in question
is one whose reports on infectious
d tense! have gained him an European
reputation and who has paid siieeial
attention to the stibjei t of diphtheria.
He modestly requested that his name
should not be given to the public if any
use was made of his remarks. lie said:
"The impression that prevails that the
neglected state of our sewers and streets
Is a prolific cause ft the disease oken
of generally as i t motie is perfectly cor-
rect but ao man v casos of diphtheria
have come under my notice lately
where the patients were surrounded by
the utmost perfect sanitary conditions
that 1 found it nejsary to look beyond
those cauae for the origin of the in'ec-
tion. A Utile raecarrh ahowed me that
Ibe prime cauee ia all those cases was
the same. AU tha patients were chil-
dren or quite young girls and I found
that they bad contra ted tbe disc saa by
kissing some infected schoolmate or
playmate. I w.ll give aa instance
to illaatrate my remarks and which
will serve at tba raroe time to illustrate
tiie extreme dsngcr children are
subjected to by kissing their yonngcom-
paaiona. A liUie girl daughter of
wealthy pareata. who almost worshi) ed
her for she waa their only child com-
plained to her attendant a few morning
ago that ahe did Dot feet well and did
aot wish to go to school. The nurse a
well-meaning but tfnorant person.
failed to ee anything tioiis the mat-
ter with the child laughed at her com-
plaint and aot desiring to trouble the
mother took tbe child to school as uaatah
.The
convinced of the danger of infection
from a ktea. Diphtheria is a for- -eign
growth in the throat In-
fection is caused by particles of
this growth coming in contact
with a healthy surface. The saliva
flows over the diseased spots and ab-
sorbs a portion of the minute spores.
The habit of most people especially
children is to moisten their lips with
tbe tongue. The infected saliva is thus
carried to tbe lips and Ibo top tact ot
lips in kissing carries the disease from
the sick to the healthy person. Nor '
diphtheria the only form of infect on
that i au be o tried by s kiss. In the
course of my practice 1 have come across
cases of the most loathsome disease
which the patient contracted by contact
with thu lipa of a diseased person- !
would aot wish to create untieoeusa.v
alarm in the mind of any person nor
have I any desire to stop the oscillatory
enjoyment so dear to sweethearts aud
newly-wedded folks. I do not suppose
that such people would heed my warn-
ings if they heard them but I do say
that for an ubhealthy person to kiti
another is a crime and the habit Of .
promiscuous kissing most dangerous
from a sanitary point of view" Sun

on a mere alley and about as large
and showy as a respectable junk-shop
is the I'nited State sub-treasury build-

vaults which underlie this unpretan-

heavy bags which give the place the ap-

room; but the grain within them is gold-
en and silver amounting one day last
month to 914000000 in silver coin and
ovur $20000000 in gold while the
sates contained 8000.000 in paper
currency. Tbe weight of the silver was
643 and of the gold 87 tons. The
amount of money on hand fluctuates of
course from day to day for the assist-
