rl'be roses have bloomed faded unci died
Without our having our coveted share.
The blossoms that scouted the vale so sweet
Have spent their fraicrance on the balmy
air.
And the fruit will ripen ere we shall meet
In tho perfume of meadows growing there.
The soft summer winds blow over the sand
The billows roll over the restless sea
And spend their force on thesllvery strand
While 1 am thinking and thinking of thee.
The feverish days and fretful nights that
' Have fillei rny heart with ardent desire
For the joys of "Everest" and "Ararat"
And left my soui In the throes of fire.
How oft I long to break this endless chain
Of mingled grief embittered sadness
And relieve my mind and bewildered brain
With a welcome hope of future gladness.
Then dispel thy dpubt nnd dispel thy fear;
The ship will come back from over tliesea;
After years of wandering far and near
I will come back to thee comeback to thee

Treat th Kldneysfor Rheumatism

The "Old Maid's Convention" yiven
at the opera house last night under
the auspices of the Ladies' Aid
Society of the Presbyterian church
was an enjoyable and altogether suc
cessful event. Some of the ladles
developed histrionic talenttbat would
be a credit to years of experience. A
good house greeted the performance
and a rare evening of fun was afford
ed. The proceeds go toward pur-
chasing aBiemorial window for the
new Presbyterian church.

The following paper on the subject
of -"Woman's lights" was read by
Mrs J C Anderson.
' Miss President When it was de-
cided that our noble society should
meet again in a body at this conveti-j
tion. I was appointed by you to write
a paper on woman's rights woman's
sufferage. But you know Miss Presi-
dent that Sophia Stuckup has opin-
ions of her own aud I did net approve
of that subject for this convention.
Voting indeed! Why It Is not voCing
we are so much Interested In as tbe
opportunity of devoting our selves to
a husband then we will talk about
our rights afterwards but where is
there a maiden spinister In all this
broad laud be she young and attrac-
tive like my sisters here or ot more
advanced years who Is such a goose
as to want to vote if she can get a
man of her own to vote for her?
Women were made for men and not
for pants and pacts were made for
men and not for women. Are we not
to talk over the interests of our be-
loved society and where is there a
subject of such vital Interest to us as
the "epitome of the world" "the
"wonder of nature" the "measure of
the universe" the goal of this society
"man." My heart pants at the
very word but why speak again of
Pants? We know too much already
of suepeuse and too little of suspen
ders.
Wtiat are we accomplishing Uy
meetiug here year after year if our
number is not growing less all the
time. Why three of our sisters are
wearing glasses this year who never
wore them before and four are dN-
playlng gray hairs lu a shocking man
ner to say nothing of thebusluess
tbe dentists are doii.g. I ay what
are we gaining by waning and listen
ing? Why one of our sisters has
been listening for fifty years and has
grown deaf In the occupation. Ifthe
iad fout.d a Gabriel sooner she would
have no need of that ear trumpet
she would have been married long
ao and wearing cottun m her ear ty
this time.
If matrimony Is the end and aim of
this society shall we not devote all
our charms aud all our talents in that
direction? Why spean or write of
anything else? And if I may be al-
lowed to make a suggestion it. Is this
that next year when we meet aaln
In convention (if we are not all mar-
before that lime) let us have ail our
songs all our essays and all our
speeches bear upon these subjects
"Ho to get married" "Tbe best
way of securing a husband" "Tbe
surest patb to matrimony" for Is nut
tbis tbe road we long have sought
and mournel because we found it not?
