LAST OF GREEN GANG
A Band ot Territory Outlaws
Wiped Out.
About twelve years ago a fam
ily of Uruens moved to the terri
tory from Montgomery county
Kansas and after a few years be
came .hrst class outlaws and
thieves. The band known us the
Green gang consisted of the three
brothers. Arthur Bill and Ed
Green with an occasional assist-
ant.
Like' many other bands that
have cut considerable ice at vari
ous times in the Cherokee nation
they finally got in front of the
business end of a Winchester and
Arthur alone was left to tell the
tale. The fight took place about
ten miles north of Claremore at
what is known as Ash-hopper
ford. Deputy Marshals Ledbet
ter and O'Brien Chas McClellan
Smith Busbyhead and others were
in ambuBh and Leonard Trainot
led the" rang into the trap. Bill
and Ed Green were killed out
right and Arthur was shot until
no one thought he could live but
he did. After bis partial recovery
be was confined in jail for. a loDg
time and finally turned loose
Returning to his old haunts be
again resumed bis lawless life and
gathered about him Henry Fagin
Benney Torrey a brother-in-law
to Fagin and a few lukewarm fol-
owers who .were with him for
company more than anything else.
The new Green gang operated
along the Osage-Cherokee line
from Tulsa north to Kansas and
appropriated such persona prop-
erty as suited their needs. As a
pastime they bootlegged whiskey
to the thirsrty patriots in that
Yicinity. Last fourth of July
Green distinguished himself in
Ramona and aroused the enmity
of the U.S. marhals who pro
ceeded to "lay for him. An expe-
dition from Claremore under
Deputy Marshal Trail failed lo
catch him but succeeded in chas-
ing him to the Osage nation where
he and Torrey were soon after
ward captured.
Deputy Mashall Trail decided
to try for r agin who got away
rom the Oklahoma authorities.
At first Fagin gave him the slip
but Trail heard that he had gone
north of Ramona to spend the
night. Deputy Trail and Lige
