makes a vast difference in the comfort
of millions of families. Of course vith
many families it is inconsequential
but with most families even the small
sum of 116.66 2-3 per annum is'.i very
desirable thing. President Taft puts
the amount that could be saved at
$100000000 per annum while Senator
Thomas H. Carter of Montana states
that $125000000 a year could be saved
in- the postoffice department si ne.
Senator Hale of Maine says that larpp
savings could be made without diri-
ment to the public service though he
fails to state the 8 mount. These are all
republican witnesses. The republicans
have had absolute possession of the
White IlGdse the senate and the hous?
of representatives for over thirteen
years. Why. then have they nni cut
down the appropriations instead of in-
creasing them? Simply becausj th?y
can not. They do not know how. It's
a clear case of incompetency. Thev
have proved incapable or their unwh
lingness to eeonom'ze and therefore
should be put out of place and power.
In one of. his recent reckless state
ments Mr Speaker Cannon tred to
load the extravagance onto tin demo-
crats. He knew that that was not true

considered the godfather of the insur-
gent movement. If the colonel were an
ordinary republican politician who
deemed It necessary to be consistent
the personal embarrassment of the sit-
uation would be difficult to escape
from. It will be interesting to watch
the political contortions of Mr. Roose-
velt especially in his advocacy of the
standpatter senator. Perhaps the col-
onel will become a molly-coddle.

I Col. Roosevelt has coined many a J
' good epigram but never has said a '
more significant thing in .reference to j
politics than when in his Buffalo j
speech this week he said "Distrust i
'above all other men the man who will j
Inveigh against crookedness only if j
he finds it connected with somebody
not connected with his own party."
All over this country we find news'
papers- of both political parties Show- j
ing up the crooks In the other party;
and blind entirely to the crooks In j
their own party ranks.

Writing to the New York World
Champ Clark says: "The riotous totals
of the appropriation bills should wake
the American taxpayers up. They are
now over a billion dollars a session and
still growing like Jonah's gourd vino.
Hitherto not even jet when demo-
cratic representatives have fought ex-
travagance we have been accused ei-
ther of cheeseparing or of a desire to
cripple the government; but republi-
can extravagance has become so fla
grant .that even certain republican
leaders are scared and are seeking to
call a halt. Senator Aldrich puts the
amount of republican waste at three
hundred millions per annum. Counting
our population at 90000 000 that's
'?3.33 1-3 a year for every man woman
and child within the broad confines of
the republic which allowing five per-
sons to the family makes a wastage
of $16.66 2-3 to the family. This is a
waste remember and that amount

Mass. The best answer I have yet
seen to Senator Owen's question Is
contained In the following poem by
Charlotte Perkins Gilman published by
the Trade Union Book Concern of
Chicago:
If fifty men did all the work
And gave the price to five;
And let those five make all the
rules
You'd say the fifty men woie
fools
Unfit to be alive.
And if you heard complaining iie3
From fifty brawny men
Blaming the five for graft nrd
greed
Injustice cruelty indeed
i What would you call them then?
Not by their own superior force
j Do five on fifty live;
j But by election and assent
And privilege of government
j Powers that the fifty give.
If fifty men are really fools
j And five have all the brains
The five must rule as now a-q

I But if the fifty have the mind-
Why dont they take the reins?

What Is the matter with Kansas?
It appears to have gone for the insur-
gents and to Hades according to
Speaker Cannon. The president and
the other stalwart leaders will have
to admit there Is a revolt on In the
West that rivals the Granger uprising
of three years ago. As for Col.
J Roosevelt the progressive victories
.would seem to leave him up in the air
politically; for while he is responsible

BUSINESS SCHOOL NOW
. ESTABLISHED IN VINITA
There has been an effort the past
two weeks to establish a school of
business in Vinita. Some encourage-
ment has been given to the Intended
principal yet not sufficient to Justify
him in locating the school and unless
additional interest is received by him
within the next day or two the school
will not be opened.
Frank B. Anderson who Is planning
the school for Vinita is both an ex-
perienced accountant and teacher.
Vinita's school would be then no ex-
periment in school work lut would
represent practical and successful ex-
perience in counting - rooms and
schools
The system of bookkeeping would be
"the Bliss Actual Business From the
Start.'" . Every transaction entered up-
on the students' books are first made
with college currency or with business
papers. Invoices are Issued and re-
ceived for sales and purchases. Noth
