POWDER TRUST EXPLODED.
Aa l'uu'oe-rul Attempt to Hot
( iiiuklu. In tba Karlr lllfi
of Colorado.
Tho big consolidation of the alcep-
Ing car companies in the Pullman
company nuiy not atrictly be called a
"corner" but whether it is or not
says the Denver Republican a men-
tion of it was enough to cull to the
mini) of an old-time Gilpin county
miner John Meyer now making his
homo at Fort Wayne Ind. an occasion
on which George M. Pullinau made an
attempt to form a "corner" in the
mining camp.
"It was in tho winter of 1803 when
we were nuowed in for weeks" anid
.Mr. Meytr. "The last freighter that
attempted to reach Iilnck Hawk was
stuck oni Dory hill; the stages couldn't
ft
et through and wo were as much
ut of the world! as though there was
not unother settlement in Colorado.
I remember paying two dollars for s
dozen eggs oiwl $50 a sack for flour.
"But we took all that in a spirit of
resignation feeling ' that it was
through a dispensation of Providence
over which wo might growl but oould
not change. All tho miners werei work-
ing ond taking out good pay so w
didn't mlndi putting up a good price
for grub. But soon the supply of blast-
ing powder began to give out until all
the dealers had Bold what they had ex-
cept Pullman. He held on to his stock
until all others were out. Then he
began to make it known that he had
a big stock but that the price would
be $25 a keg. The previous price was
ten dollars.
"The miners must have powder but
we did not feel- that we could pay his
price. A committee from a meeting'
that we held calla" on Pullman tell-
ing him we would p..y $15 for the pow-
der but no more. His answer was
that we would pay hi? price or we
would not get the goods.
"Now that sounded too much like
a threat to pass unnoticed. The com-
mittee had no more than reported
their interview with the dealer when
there was a stir among the men at the
meeting. Hardly a word was spoken
still everyone knew what was to be
done. Everything was orderly enough.
What I mean there was no show of
the kind that is usual with mobs al-
though we were aa much a mob as
any that ever attacked o Jail.
"We gathered crowbars and picks
and such tools as might prove handy
and started quietly toward Pullman's
store. .It was situated about at the
head of the road between Central City
and Black Hawk at what they call
Mountain City. We didn't have any
trouble in making an entrance to the
room in which the powder was stored;.
Teams were brought out and the pow-
der loaded and carted away when an
equitable distribution anftng the
miners of the powder was made. A
record was kept of the amount that
each man received. Then we paid him
$12.50 a can just half the amount he
asked.
"For a long time Pullman refused
to accept the price that we offered for
it but finally he thought better of
the proposition and was glad to accept
our price.
?I wish that I could remember the
names of the men that forme that
mob. Many of then) have since be-
come prominent in state andl national
affair aDd in finances."
