ever figured in the history of this
country has gone stark mad. He
ia a prisoner at Ft. Sill Oklahoma.
It cost the government a million
dollars and hundreds of li vea be-
fore he was safely behind lock and
key. Deprived of bis liberty as a
punishment for his crimes' he
could not stand the confinement.
For fourteen years be has been a
prisoner of war tha last ten years
at Ft. Sill.
For almosthalf a century Geron-
imo led a band of bloodthirsty
Apaches on the war path. He was
a terror to the early settlers of the
southwest. At the age of 16 years
bis people crowned him a war
chief because he successfully led
them in a bloody battle. In 1882
be and Victoria with 600 Apaches
were attacttd by Mexican soldiers.
Victoria was captured and behead-
ed but Geroni'mo escaped and be-
came the great war chief. In
March 1886 after four years of
constant chase Gen. Miles and
Major Gen. Lawton cornered Ge-
ronimo in the Four Peaks basin
near Prescot. Arizona After
months of starvation and after all
hope of cutting their way through
the cordon of troops surrounding
them had gone the Indians raised
the white flag and surrendered.
Tbey were - sent to the military
post at Mount vernon Alabama
but the climate there did not agree
with them many dying of con-
sumption. About ten years ago
Geronimo and his surviving braves
were removed by the government
to Ft. Sill. Guthrie Leader.
