If all f he signs that are talked of and
published whereby character mny b
read and studied should be mastered
nearly everyone would become an adeptl
In discerning that which la apparently
hidden in human nature.
One of the singular things given as
a means of judging character is the
manner of ringing a doorbell. It is
said that a person will pull every bell
in a nearly uniform vta3'f which will
not tell the color of eyes or hair but
will speak of the quality of temper
which the puller of the bell may be ex-
pected to show. It will tell whether
he is phlegmatic or nervous In manner
whether he is amiable or irritable im
patient and intolerant or calm and rea-
sonable. The mere jerk of the knob
gives evidence for or against in the
mind of a discriminating person. 1
" The electric bell cannot tell so many
tales it is said but when time has
given it a chance to become more indi-
vidual than it now is the touching of
the little button will indicate as many
grades of disposition as the jingling of
the bell wire now does.
Another thing that indicates char-
acter is the gait at which a person
walks. The manner in which he will
step about is also to be taken into ac-
count in passing judgment on anyone.
A careless slovenly walk will show a
corresponding carelessness in manner
and dress. Xothing reveals the incli-
nation to laziness more certainly than
the walk.
An uneven step will as certainly dis-
close a vacillating mind and behavior
to correspond. Kveryone knows the
trial it is to a household when one of
its members walks with sharp punctu
ating digs of the heels at every step.
These people always step quickly so
that the sound of their walking is like
a great tattoo and acts on nervous peo-
ple with disastrous consequences.
Those who have made a study of the
subject say that men are quite as care-
less as women in their manner of walk
ing. A graceful carriage and a good
walk if dependent npon the character
is according to that rule not to be
cultivated but must lie as it were to
the manor born. A heavy trend set
down by a person who throws himself
well back may indicate excessive pride
or a trifle of indolence with really good
nature at heart.
The sprightly sort of people who can
not refrain from skipping as they walk
may be set down as amiable and bright
but are somewhat of a trial from over-
buoyancy.
A good deal has been said In novels
against the woman who moves with
a "catlike tread" that is without noise.
Such a step is however considered
most desirable and it is declared that
it does not indicate a treacherous na-
ture but as often as not has been cul-
tivated to prevent giving distress to
sick people or drawing undue attention
to the owner of the feet. X. V. Tribune.
