Held a prolilable one to cultivutu. The
camp is in charge of Queen "Mollie"
Markis now 70 years of age nnd her
son 'i'hoirius now oflieiates a& chief of
the bund. The Markis fumily consUts
of these two and Annie wife of Thomas
four children and Maggie and Annie
Markis sisters of the chief. A num-
ber of others are also with the band.
Their outfit is well adapted to their
nomadia life. The queen's wagon is
sumptuously fitted up with red up-
holstery laee curtaiiis and bedding of
the finest material. Another wagon
which cost $500 is the traveling convey-
ance of Mrs Annie Markis and the
chief's sisters. This vehicle is also
handsomely fitted out with yellow and
gold hangings lace curtains and silk
bed clothing.
Chief Markis says hit band is under
command of Great Chief Stanley and
Queen Mollie his wife who are winter-
ing at Omaha 'eb. they being one
of the 3S0 families under Stanley as
king. Chief Markis has been wander-
ing over the earth for 32 years hav-
ing traveled from Cairo Egypt
through Germany Russia Asia Eng-
land France Mexico andiearly all the
United States west of the New Eng-
land states ne says tfle western states
are most suitable for their nomadic
life; its camping grounds are more
plentiful; everybody Is willing to trade
horses and all feminine members of
the population being anxious to have
their fortunes told.
Queen Mollie'is considered an oracle
palmistry being her strong point. She'
is hardly conversant with the English
language as in private conversation
they all speak the gypsy lingo.
The women folks of the band claim
that Philadelphia is a great field for
fortune telling and the men say that
with horse trading and racing they ex-
secfc to put in a profitable winter.- s
Kew Tork state has 120000 more

Eighty per cent of the cost of the
world's governments is caused by wars
past present and prospective."
During the last 13 months at least
a dozen elephant trainers have been
killed more than have been killed in
ten years previously.
The winter season is hardest on pi-
anos. The rooms containing them are
often kept too warm and the result is
that the wood work becomes too dry.
Last year 25824 letters which were

dead letter office in Washington. Stran-
ger than this is the fact that 13443 of
them contained money.
The Indlajis of South America use
a curious poison which is called ezcai.
A grain of it has the effect of starting
an Irresistible desire for exertion. The
victim begins walking1 briskly round
and round in small circles till he drops
dead in his tracks. There is no pain
but much excitement.
According to Sir Algernon .West's
"Becollections" a man at election time
tried to sell some kittens with blue
tory ribbons on and failed. The next
day he tried to sell them with yellow
liberal ribbons on. "Why" said some
one "they were tories yesterday!"
"Yes" lie said "but their eyes are
opened since then and they have be.
come liberals."
The alarming increase cf juvenile
Criminals in Germany Is puzzling the
legislators. In 1SS5 the juvenile offend-
ers numbered 30704 the total rising to
43504 in 1S04 and to 47075 in 1S98. The
increase of all criminals in 1S98 over
the preceding year was three per cent.
an increase disproportionate to the
growth of population. The juvenile
criminals however increased alarm-
i'!'y the number in 1898 being six per
cent over that of 1897.
