LET US BEAUTIFY
OUR BUSY CITY.

-jnta. situated at the initial
crossing of the two great railway
systems of the Indian Territory
may be said to be the gateway to
this country. Nine out of every
ten persons entering this country
frcm the north or east will paBB
through our city and in leaving
it is to a large degree the same
Upon no city in the union has na
ture been eo lavish io the bestowal
of pure arteBian water as upon
Vioita and with its aid is brought
our opportunity for making this a
perfect beauty spot without great
expense. As first impressions are
generally lasting how more than
important to our permanent wel
fare is it that everything possible
be don to beautify and improve
our city. Hotel accommodations
are ample our citizens have
ehown commendable pride in
beautifying their homes our Btores
are well kept and if in the matter
of public conveniences and im-
provements the city was up to and
ahead of the times it would indeed
be a model place.
That we have not these things
isajmatter of apathy and not of
parsimony 'for it is doubtful if
3ue ever was a town that wouid
'put up" more generously . Not
infrequently the t'cneflt derived is
ut of proportion to the com but
:?bat stands all the mor to the
t i-vti's credit.
The installing ol a public sys-
tem of waterworks and sewerage
at a very early day may be re
girded s assured and this in face
ol the fact that there are fifteen or
twenty artesian wells in the city
eupplyiog watfr at no small ex-
pense to a good number of families.
Sidewalks paved street more
etr?l lights improved parks all
tbe-e thiijg can be provided for
by iaiatun and our people are
generally willing to incur the ex j
Dens. I ne more attractive our
city is made '.be more persons will
locale- wiinin it borders and tri-
butary country and help bear the
expend to ay nothing of tbe
pleasure of living in a firt tlas
up-to-date town. Let tbe city
authorities not be afraid to incur
I any reasonable- unsocial uongi

Jubt at this time when tbe In-
dian Territory is in the progress
of evolution lor what we hav
thus far accomplished is but a
trifle in comparison with the
great undeveloped future no town
cherishing any hopes of greatnes
can afford to get along without
the assistance of a local commer
cial body. Last spring an organ-
ization was partially formod to
be known as a townsite company
but its projectors bad in mind a
different line oT work frcm that of
the usual commercial club though
either one would prove an import-
ant auxiliary of tbe other.
Unfonuuately the club we bad
a few years ago was simply per
mitted to die and thus we are
without that very useful adjunct
to the growing western town and
a luiHiortune it is. in ere are
business enterprises ail over tbe
country looking up new locations
and in frequent instances they can
be "landed" without tbe expendi-
ture of anything except time. As
surance of good will and hear'.y
expression of support in an uu
dertaking in many cases go far
ther than a bonns. We have more
natural advantages to offsr than
most of our neighbor towns ol the
Territory and a good lively board
of trade would find plenty of op.;
portunity for setting forth those
advantages to interested parties.
Tbe man who wants to Ftart
even a brick yard in a locality new
to him don't like to "butt in" but
would ra;her b invited and given
an asturance that be is wanted.
There is rt-ally no limit to the
pos-ibilities for accomplishing i
good along the various lines sug-
gested and if some one c-tn reju
venate the Virata Commercial
club or start a new one on its feet
let our citizen not ha particular
