Worn continues without abatement in many portions
of the city. Never in the history of Vinitawereso many
people earning money and never were so many substan-
tial .improvements being made.
The white adopted citizens of the Cheroke Nation
have a particularly warm spot in their heart for one Joe
M. Lallay. It lias leaked out since the council adjourned
that Joseph played a fine game with the adopted citizens
in the hope of landing the Washington commissioner-
ship as a prize. Many of the leading white adopted citi-
zens were friends of Lallay at a time when he needed
friends and they were making little chalk marks to re-
mind them of his action during the last Cherokee coun-
cil. The time is not far distant when Lallay would give
bis ana to wipe from the memory of men the two-state
convention and the last session of the Cherokee council.

THE SINGLE STATE.
Senator Clapp of Minnesota has been making a tour
of investigation and inquiry through the Indian Terri.
tory and Oklahoma preparatory to his departure for
Washington. He is the chairman of the Senate commit-
tee on territories to which in due course the bills for
the admission of territories to statehood must go. It has
been assumed all along that the only opposition to be
encountered by Oklahoma whether applying for separate
statehood or statehood in combination with Indian Ter-
ritory would be encountered in the Senate. It was in
the Senate or through the action or inaction of that
body that Oklahoma on two previous occasions failed of
statehood after securing favorable action in the House.
The visit of Senator Clapp to the territory and the ex-
tending of his observations into the Indian Territory as
a means of discovering the sources and the strength of
the protest against single statehood there gives assur-
ance of fair and intelligent action by the Senate commit

tee on territories early in t e session.
What form this actlonfcnay be expec A to take has
been foreshadowed by Senator Clapp in a speech made in
the Indian Territory only a few days ago and in which
he appears to have discussed statehood and the opposi-
tion of the Indian Territory thereto at considerable
length. The most significant declaration of hia address
was that it is settled in advance that the Senate will
take final action upon the matter during the coming ses-
sion. This U being interpreted in the Indian Territory
as being practically an assurance that their proposed new
state Sequoyah will be admitted They do not under-
take to indicate what will become of Oklahoma in the
shuffle. There maylean impression at Muskogee tlat
Oklahoma will be left out. There are ardent souls in the
Indian Territory capable of seeing Sequoyah in the sis-
terhood with Oklahoma shivering on the outside. It is
the romance of these brave and trusting souls which
makes t' e Sequoyah movement so picturesque and so im-
mune from harsh criticism.
There may be others in the Indian Territory to be
found among the shrewd leaders in the Muskogee con-
vention who are on)y hoping to perpetuate a territorial
government and who see in it a prospect of the erection
of two suites one of which called Sequoyah they may
well hope to control in the interestof favored enterprises
almost as well as through territorial forms. The Major-
ity of the Muskogee leaders however cannot fail to un-
derstand inwardly that the meaning of Senator Clapp's
certainty of final action can mean
that the sustained effort to defeat
statehood both for Oklahoma and Indian Territory thro'
the fomentation of strife between them can no longer
continue and that there will be a state erected in that
section of the country before the winter ends. Unless
the wise men of Muskogee may be classed with those who
can see a state of Sequoyah with a territory of Oklahoma
on its western border they can indulge themselves in no
delusions touching the creation of two new states. Nor
are they so indulging themselves. Their misinterpreta-
tion of Senator Clapp's plain declaration of purpose is to
continue the fooling of their enthusiastic followers as a
force to continue federal government in the Indian Ter-
ritory for a few years longer when in the natural course
of human events it would be annexed to the state of
Oklahoma. Globe-Democrat.
