VI how roach fun the boyB had in the
fat men's race he decided to get in
the game and turned the gavel

The prke was an original poem
by Preston S. Davis and for that
reason the author refused to con-
test. It was agreed thatthecourse
was to be 00 yards but CoL Mar-
ram and Mr. Stanfield entered ob-
jections. When they were .over-
ruled Mr. Stanfield noted an ex-
ception. .
Captain .Barker gave the word
and a streak of legal talent flew
down the course. Chandler got
the inBide rail and kept it to the
finish passing under the wire a
6hort neck in advance of Dr. Ben-
nett. Many thought it a dead
heat but after a short argument a
decision was rendered giving the
poem to Chandler. Mr. Mellette
finished third while Captain
White Mr. Soper and the others
were docketed in the "also ran"
class.
In the chase for the greaeed pig
whose ears bad been cut off to les-

attempted to fall on the porker but
the animal escaped with a squeal.
Judge Gill arose from the ground
muttering a threat to send the pig
to jail for trickery in evading dim
but continued gamely in the race.
The lutie beast in trying to escape
the clutches of Prosecutor Huckle-
berry ran between the legs of Col.
Cravens and npset that gentleman
who immediately filed a long list
of interrogatories in an endeavor
to ascertain if Mr. Huckleberry
had beaded the pig hi? way "with
sinister intention."
Mr. Soper got a grip on a hind
leg but the greaeed animal tlipped
oat much to Scper'a di?gu?t who
at once demurred on the ground
that it was r.ot a proper action on
iamson 'frst threatened to inuututo
quo warranto proceedings then at-

the keeping of its captors. He
w-as cut short however when the
three victors could not agree on a
proper division and Parker sued
or the appointment of a receiver

be made.
A legal plum wa3 placed at the
top of the greasedpole and Preston
Davis recalling the cherry tree

higher until just as he reached
out for the coveted prize bis feet
slmned and down he came then
Mr. Soper with a smile stood on
hi3 tiptoes and reaching up
plucked the plum.
After the sack race in which Mr.
Huckleberry distanced all compet-
itors and the potato race won by
W. II. Kornegay the bicycle race
was declared off until New Year's
while the boys played a game of
blind men's buff with Co!. Mar-
cum Col. Cravens Preston Davis
and W. H. Kornegay "it" in turn.
