The competition of tbe Katy
and the Frisco for tbe business of
the cotton compress has brought
about a pretty fight between tbe
two roads In this city and as a re-
sult tbb.e was. Bonus pretty fast
work on tbe part of parties repre
seuting bulb c impdoies Thursday
Iheiiaty was to nulla a spur
into tbe cotton compress. Maps
and profiles had been filed bat
this apparently was as far as tbe
matter bad cone Meanwhile tbe
redoubtable Boper aud bis assist
ants had gotten nuieUy at work
and bought a right of-w y into tbe
compress lrom their linn and made
all preparations for building tbe
spur. Toe fight was over a crocs
ing tbe Frisco bad to make on tbe
Katy line. When everything was
in readiness S iper and Lumii F
Paiker ireueral solicitor of the
Frisco showed ibeir hand and
played tneir trump card. They
asked the council to pass a a ordi
nancs allowing them to cross such
streets as was nectsiiry to reach
tbe coiiiprta. But the Katy peo-
ple bad gotten onto the deal by
tbat time and were there to 6ght
But the Frisco had gotten too
much the start and there was no-
thing for the council to do but to
grant the 'ordinance. The Katy
could have g itien the same ordi'
nance for Muskogee is a railroad
town and what tbn roads want and
need they usually get.
Within an h ur a'ter the fran-
chise ws granted there were 100
mn work potting in the Y from
I!.- Frisco..
A lib in fiiteen minutes after the
ordinance had been granted the
sfenograptiers in C. L. Jackson's
otlice were making the typewriters
fly g'ttititf ( Qi au application for
an injunction to prevent the Fris
co from crofMBij the Katy track.
This applic;ir!f w presented to

The efforts of the Commercial
club are being rewarded with suc-
cess in some quarters at least.
Tbe latest accomplishment is the
assurance of two additional street
crossings over tbe Katy north of
tbe Frisco crossing. At present
tbe crossings on this road are a
balf mile apart.
Tbe efforts to secure the adop-
tion of some means for safeguard
ing tbe Frisco crossing at tbe
stock yards ere also promising re-
sults. The company officials state
tbat it will be cheaper for thereto
construct an underground crossing
than to maintain a watchman at
Ibat point tbat the interest on
the money required will be less
than a watchman's wages. If this
plan is adopted it will be neces
sary to begin tbe excavation back
towards Judge Gill's residence.
Vinita is not so much concerned
at to tbe means employed as tbat
itshallbe effective and shall be
speedily put in operation.
The union depot project may be
said to be jut holding its own
we are doing as well as Kansas
City and 8outh McAleeter. Tbei
Frisco now says "ready!" but!
alas tbe Katy will not give the
word "go" President Rouse says
the roads business at this point
does not warrant the expenditure.
A member of the Commercial club
bo has had much to do with
railroads says there is at leant one
way to get the depot that ia to
freely use slickers: "Ship all our
freight via Frisco until completion
of the new Katy depot " It is to
bp hoped that moral t-uasion will
prevail and Mr. Roune r-lent hut
Vinita wants that brick depot
