The First Scapegoat.
The word "scapegoat" originated In
an ancient Hebrew custom practised
at the feast of the Passover. Placing
a young goat upon the altar the
oriests would pray over It asking that
all the sins of the people be visited
upon the goat.
Then after each member of taa
tribe bad transferred his guilt to the
victim by laying on his handa the ani-

Notea Always Pure White.
The Bank of England refuses to use
color for its notes on account of the
fact that the authorities believe that
its whiteness and apparent simplicity
are the greatest safeguards against
forgery. The whiteness of a Bank of
England note is different to that of
any other paper and is obtained by
using only the very finest linen rags
In the making.
Fashion in Brides.
The natives of the Sandwich islands
estimate women by their weight. The
Chinese require them to have de-
formed feet and black teeth. A girl
must ba tattooed sky-blue and wear a
nose ring to satisfy a South Sea
islander. Certain African princes re-
quire their brides to have their teeth
filed into the semblance of a saw.
Long Sleep Brought Death.
There Is a record in medical works
of a man near Rochester N. Y. who
slept five years never waking more
than 16 hours at a time and that only
at intervals of six weeks or more.
When seized by the trance he weighed
160 pounds and he dwindled to 90
pounds. No treatment availed; he
died.
Cut Out of a Sphere.
In the production of common watch
glasses the glass is blown Into a
sphere about 40 inches in diameter
sufficient material being taken to give
the desired thickness. Discs are then
cut Jttt from this sphere with t;ie aid
of a pair of compasses having a dia-
mond at the extremity of one leg.
Danger in Giving Up Business.
The man who wishes to live out hie
allotted span of life with ten or 20
years to spare should never retire
from business. That is the opinion
of Dr. Scofield an eminent physician
of Lonrton. He says there is a great
danger it any sudden change of en
vironment after a certain age.
High Time.
Mother (to daughter whose father
goes around the corner every time she
opens the piano) Emily you must
stop practicing. Tour father's nose al-

Mastery of Life.
Life is an art in which w too
often ipmnln were dilettanti; one
cannot attain mastery in it except by
pouring out one's heart's blood.
Carmen Syivia (Queen Elizabeth of
Roumania).
Part of Their Business.
A Winsted (Conn.) dispatch says:
"Yankee schoolmarms" are getting
scarce. Not surprising when one
learns further on that these teachers
are as a rule good cooks.
Queer Idea of Perfume.
The Tartar regards onions leeks and
garlic as perfumes. A lady of Tartar
will nib a piece of freshly cut onion
on her hands and over her counte-
nance to enhance her attractions.
Salt In the Dead Sea.
At a depth of 66 feet the water of
the Dead sea Is twice as salt as it Is
on the surface and at 1000 feet three
times as salt.
Swearing Off.
Some men swear off for the same
reason that lovers quarrel It's so
pleasant making up.
