Statehood with or without Ok-
laborna at the present time would
mean a burden that the people of
the Indian Territory should not
assume. State governments are
maintained by taxing the people
and without taxable land the ter-
ritory would find itself paying a
personal tax that would be ruin
ous. A territorial form of govern
ment would be more in keeping
with present conditions. We have
a population of about $400000 ac
cording to the census reports
without an acre of taxable land.
Oklahoma has about the same
population with practically all its
land taxable. If we go into
statehood partnership with her
we simply agree to raise as much
money Dy personal taxation as
she does with land and personal
taxation combined. Such a move
ment would mean the business
death of every town in the Indian
country until lands could be taxed
The boomer cty lor statehood with
Oklahoma will find no advocates
among thinking territory people.

The closing up of the wairou road
south of town is becoming a very seri
ous matter and outfit to be adjusted
In some way or in other words a good
pasHable roadway ought to be opened
there. Farmers cannot tret to town
that way and corn haulers are put to
great inconvenience. A good share of
Vinita's trade is fenced out effectual-
ly. There will have to be some per
manent roads iuiu out and kept open
leading to Vlnita. One great mistake
has been in turning all the roads on
to the railroad right-of-way. Such an
arrangement can only be temporary.
and it make all roads dangerous anyway.
