The preliminary survev of the Vi-
i.iu Centralis and Cotleyville road is
t ing pushed as rapidly as possible.
This morning the surveyors wore seven
ai d a half miles from town and so far
t o grade has been less than one-half
r I one per cent if the weather con-
rj tea favorable they will have the
f -iiminary work completed by the
ti 1 of next week
Mr. McClelland says that the road
h .n here to Centralia will not re-
's -ire very heavy grading but that a
t -h grade will be required for several
f .les on either side of the Verdigris
r ur and that from the state line into
f.' Teyville will also require many high
i idus and deep cuts. Mr. McClelland
.. contemplating an extension of the
r vl to Fort Smith. The only ques
i i now under consideration is wheth-
or not the line from here to that
iint would be a pa)ing investment j
"Very few people sajs T. Mc-
rillaiid ' have any conception of the
; reliminary work and investigation
i..at is necessary in the promotion of
'illroaAs. Ifc Is necessary that the
unes of every one living in the ter-
'iio.y to be reached by the road
- 'lould be known. How much of a
rop was raised by them hut year and
hy they did not raise mere etc It
i this amount of tonage and business
i it the roud would probably get that
.luces companies and corporations to
i i build railroads. This matter has
ready been gone over from here to
uffeyvlile and thai part of the road
- i'l be put In operation as soon a
. -oblc "
Mr. McClelland has made some in-r.-stigations
of the proposed extension
' nn here to Fort Smith but there
xs been no definite conclusions reach-
tl concerning the matter up to this
time. He will be in ViniU for a week
r more yet to see that the work is
kept moving ami ii ay then go from

ASSAULTED BY
A NEGRO BRUTE.
Itss Jordan Narrowly Escapes
a Biutal Assault.
Miss Carrie Jordan of this city
was assaulted by a negro this morning
lit-r screams frightened him away
and a crowd of men with blood hounds
we scouring the woods and country
starch of the vUliau but as yet
ae not succeeded in finding him.

WHEN THE PAPER WAS LATE
Soma of tbe Pleasant epeHifti (
Nwspapcr Work.
"""
The other evening the Daily Chief-
tain was unusually late in going to
press owing to some unavoidable
1 ly in getting the engine started con-
sequently tlie carriers were la'e in
delivering the papers. Alwut 5 o'clock
the telephone N'gan to ring and these
are some of the moisaircs that came
in:
The tirst complaint was from a
gentleman quite a ways out. fie be-
gan by luijulring If this was the Chief-
tain office. On being informed that
it was he wanted to know why he had
not got his paper. He said he didn't
suppose there was any news but he
was afraid there might be and he
didn't want to miss it if there wis.
The situation was explained to his
satisfaction and the. conversation
ended when another alarm was turned
hi from another part of town: this
time a little mote sarcastic. The
call was that of a lady with a tine
soprano voice that made the copper
wire fairly sing. "We want to knw
whether you are going to send our
p it.T or not t e don t owe vou but
t o week on it. and if you are afraid
you won't- pet jour money you can stop
the paper but if we don't get this
evening's paper I won't pay you a
c:iit." She hung up the reeeivpr with-
out waiting fcr an answer.
The next was a man and more con-
siderate lie said: "Ah ha! iuit
printing an evening p.; per eh? (Join
to run a morr.it.' par-r V We'l I
t bought you'd H up after awhile.
Sorry to have quit; not a qi:t ion of
finance hope. !f it is I woildti't
mind paying" month -r v) in ad-
vance." Thinrs mcie fvltivi pretty warm
around the Chieftain 'phone when a
lady called up to say that she "wished
to goodness-sakes" we would get an-
other carrier on their route. She said
she had missed several papers lately
and that her husband was always so
cross when he didn't get the paper he
made life miserable for all of them
she said tie had been out in the yard
twice looking all around and wouldn't
eat supper until tie read the paper.
liy this time the boys had gotten
pretty well around with their papers
and after visiting with numerous sub
scriber orer the 'phone exchanging
compliments and assuring them thai
the complaints of each would be taken
under advisement and that it would
not happen again the subject was
dropped.
While these mishaps are annoying
to the office and subscribers alike they
prove conclusively one thing and that
is that the people read the Chieftain.
In conclusion we will say that the
circulation of the Daily Chieftain is
now under the careful management
of Miss Halle Thompson and with a
number of good wide-a-wake lively
earners many delays and mistakes
will be avoided in the future. How-
ever if you fail to receive your paper
notify the office and the matter will
receive prompt attention.
"Hot rootim The Boes."
The pract ical joke known as "hot-
foot ing-' w hich has been in vogue here
for several nights readied the limit
last night and lias been discon-
tinued. For several nights past some
of the boys about lown have been
amusing themselves by going to the
railway waiting rooms and rudely
awakening sleepy travelers by pouring
gasoline on their feet and then light-
ing the gasoline. Last night two
of the victims were burned one of
them a young man from Joplin pret-
t r badly. So much ra?ollne was used
tha: Lis overalls and jetjoe were al-
most ruined and his feet were badly
blistered. The injured man was taken
to the Gem lodging rooms and today
was able to go on to Joplin. The boy
who lighted the gasoline hearing
that the officers were looking for him
jumped on an outgoing passenger
train and left the city.
