Muskogee is preparing a three j
dsys racing program. About $1000
have been offered in purses to the
winners. I
There has been a decided slump
in basebal talk on the street this
week. A lew successful home
games will again bring it up to its
normal standing however.
The Oawes commission has been
engaged in taking the census of
tbe Cboctaws for some months :
past. It is not all probable that:
the Cherokees will receive any
more attention from the commis-
sion very soon.
The Frisco has declared a divi-
dend of 2 per cent on its $16000-
O00 second preferred stock. The
first dividend ever paid on this
.. issue was in 1898 when tbe hold-
ers were paid 1 per cent. This is
an indication that the Frisco is
doing its share of the business.
A Quiet Wedding.

tbe parsonage last night Mrs. Nancy

as the lady is a sister of Mrs. John j
Tliouiason and Mrs Gejrge Nidiffer.
Both bride and groom were just the

Peculiar People.
Amongst the many peculiar customs
prevalent among the people of Central
America Is that- of parting for one year
after the marriage ceremony has been
solemnized. This custom has prevailed
among tbe Jarnoa from time Immemo
rial There is ho courtship allowed to
fee carried on between the parties prior
to the wedding. When a man selects
a woman he obtains the consent of tbe
parents on both sides and if this is
given they are at once married. The
reason however for their not living
together as man and wife for one year
after marriage Is in order to permit of
the parties visiting and staying with
their respective friends In different
parts of the country which is a cus-
tomary thing and occupies tbe time
specified. in ninety-nine cases out of
hundred these marriages turn out
well.

"That is by Campbell. Of course you '

"Oh yes" she answered" 1 recognize
It But to tell you the truth 1 never
cared so much for Campbell's poetry. I
thought his ploys were fine. When 1
was a little girl I used to beg father to
let me go to the theater every time I
saw 'Bartley Campbell's White Slave'
on tbe bill boards."
He looked uneasy but merely re-
marked:
"You like plays?"
"Yes indeed."
"So do I. By the way that reminds
me of something. You know Sheridan's
'Eivols?'"
. "Xot personally" she replied. "You
see I was not born until after that war
and I never took much interest in mil-
itary affairs until recently. But I have
no doubt that Fighting Phil bada great
many of them.
""A great many what?"
"Why rivals of course."
"Oh yes; of course.".
"Did you admire Stevenson?" he in-
quired apprehensively.
"Stephenson? Oh yes indeed. I
think the way he discovered the loco-
motive was too cute for anything.
Don't you think so?"
"Yes" was the melancholy reply "it
was.pretty cute. But I wasn't referring
to that-"
"Oh! How stupid of me. You mean
Adlai. I never saw a man in my life
who wouldn't get to talking about po-
litical people sooner or later. Be was a
very good vice president" she added
confidently "very good indeed. By the
way you were speaking of the stage.
Do you like Jefferson?"
Willie looked up and wearily asked:
"Which one Tom or Joe?"
But she was perfectly willing to talk
about either and as be took his leave
she cast upon him a glance of bewitch
ing sweetness and said it was such a
pleasure to meet a man once in awhile
who could converse intelligently.

HIGH-HEELED SHOES.
Wooiea Should Eajoy Their Broad'
Toed Shoe While
- - Ther atar.
Since women have been wearing1
sensible broad-toed flat-heeled boots
most of the chiropodists have found
business slack. But if Dame Humor
foretells correctly they'll soon be
brushing up their signs and working
overtime to meet demands.
Our British cousins say that women's
feet should look small. American girls
always bad their own ideas about this
matter and crammed their toes' Into
narrow shoes until they hobbled like
tbe dainty little almond-eyed ladies of
Cbina but since the golf girl came
and tbe bicycle girl too there has
been a change. Louis IV. shoes are all
right to dance In but they don't
amount to a row of pins when one is
boating or wheeling or fishing or climb
ing hills and trat s what the summer
girl of to-day is doing most of tbe
time. - She doesn't want to be pinched
up or helpless and enjoys the fresh air
of heaven and tbe sunshine and nature.
The broad comfortable shoe was a
godsend after years of misery with the
sharp-pointed footgear that kept her
toes twisted together and her instep
raised like a flagpole. And now jnst
after salvation bas come must she
once more don the painful horrors from
which she bas been but recently un-
chained? Every woman will declare that she
will never again be a victim of short
narrow shoes whatever tbe fashion
may be. That's all right to say but
how many will have the courage to
wear one sort of a shoe when all the
rest of beskirted humanity is wearing
some other style? Not many it Is to
be feared. Tbe physical culture advo-
cates will be among the minority and
possibly the girls who go In for out-
door sports to an'unuBuai extent. But
no mifrter bow advanced women may
become or bow strong-minded it takes
tbe nerve and energy and courage of a
Julius Caesar or an Alexander to war
against the decrees of fashion and
Julius Caesarsnnd Alexanders are rath-
er rare in femininity's ranks these
days.-Chicago Times-Herald.
