Six Esquimau t
returned from here. Yith four men
and 45 dogs moving the supplies for
eighty days the crossing of the Ci:-cuni-polar
tract began. Three das
later two other Esquimaux forming
the last supporting party returnf-d
and the trials now begun reduced by
the survival of the fittest. The be:-t
men and "6 dogs were picked for the
final effort.
"For several days after the sigh:
of known land was lost an overcast
sky prevented an accurate detereiin-
atiou of our positions. On March SO
the horiion partly cleared and new
(and was discovered. Our obseya-
tkms gave our position latitude S-MT
longitude. There was an ur
gent need of rapid advance. Our
main session did not permit a detour
for the purpose of exploring toe
coast. Here we saw the last signs
of solid earth; beyond there was noch
ir.g stable to be seen.
"We advanced steadily over the
t 0 1 monotony of the moving sea of U
Enforce-!
1908. The temperature was miuuu ZS
centergrade bar 23. -U! latitude SO;
as for the longitude it was nothing
as it was but a word.
"Although erazy with joy our
spirits began to undergo a feeling
of weariness. The next day after tak-
ing all our observations a sentiment
of intense solicitad? penetrated us
while we looked at the horizon. Was
is possible that this desolate region
without a patch of earth had aroused
the ambition of so many men for so
many centuries? There was no
ground only immensity of dazzling
snow no living being no point to
break the frightful monotony.
"On April 22rd we started on or
return.

Spokane Wash. Sept. 2. Sixteen
thousand school children of Spokane
and as many as can come from the
tributary districts will be among the
thousands to welcome President Taft
when he comes to Spokane on his
transcontinental trip the morning cf
September 2S. Mayor Nelson S. Pratt
plana to include in the "Seeing Spo-
kane" automobile tour for the presi-
dent a route takiDg in most of the
public and parochial schools in the
city. At points where the schools are
off the route the children will be mob-
ilized with those at the building near-
est to it and in this way all will have
an opportunity to see the chief execu-
tive. Mayor Pratt believes this inno-
vation wouid be enjoyed by President
Taft while it will mark a milestone in
the lives of the children and one which
they will remember the rest of their
days.
