SINGING IN THE ARMY.
Cnstoiu InauKorated in Honoldla

There i evidently a dillerence of
oiiniou umong army oilicers as to the
vulue or utility of tinging us part of
the routine of a teoldivr's life in time
of peace. According to a recent re
port from Honolulu where there in
a gurrison of two companies of ar
tillery Maj DuvJa formerly in com
mand inaugurated the custom of hav
ing the soldiers sing "The Kta-r-Spaa-
gled Banner" with bugle accompani
ment at retreat each evening. When
Maj. John JJcClellan artillery t-jirps
relieved Maj. Davis of command at
Honolulu a few mouths ago be found
this custom in vogue. He was some-
what surprised at first when retreat
was sounded to hear the bugles start
the refrain of the patriotic air men-
tioned and the 200 men under arms
break out iu a chorus of that song
and continue it on the march. ltwa
net very good music end the soldier
did not appear to enjoy the perform
ance any more than the listeners did.
Whether it was because of the bad
inging or some other reason Maj
MeCiellan concluded to discontinue
the practice and issued an order to
that effect to that "retreat" in Hono
lulu is now- conducted in the usual
way without vocal music. It is said
that the new order is entirely satis'
factory to the (soldiers. They object
ed to singing on the march for sev
eral reasons. In the first place thej
couldn't king and in the second place
they thought the performance too
much like a s-chool boys' ceremony and
beneath the dignity of real soldiers

It is rarely that suspended matter in
the air or water fails at lentrth to sob-
side but the process may be slow r
it may be rapid. In either case the
act of suhtiidenre effects purification
Itie condition of chv streets after a
persistent dense tog fs well known
the pavements are covered with
greasy grime the impurities of the
air oily soot and tarry bituminous-
particles combining to make a slippery
pasty mass. This mass possesses a re
markable and objectionable bacteriol
