REVENUE STATEMENT
Two Years' Receipts Amount
To $2260502
At last a Btatement has been is
sued by the Indian agency giving
the receipts from royalties and
. revenues collected in the Cherokee
nation by that office during the
two years it has undertaken the
collection ot these revenues.
It is a remarkable statement
in that it gives the receipts for the
two years.but fails to give expenses
for but one year. We believe this
is the only statement ever issud by
the department on this subject and
Sit would surely have been more
satisfactory to the Cherokee' peo-
ple if a lull statement for the two
year? bad been made
' It has the appearance of a just
ification of the interior depart-
men in us course m their col-
lection. A little analysis of the
figures Will Show that the tax col-
lector has been of very little bene-
fit to the Cherokee people.
The. receipts for the two years
amount to $22605.02 the expenses
- last year amounted to $5833 01.
As no figures were given on the
previous y'ear it Sb fair to assume
by the average reader that ; the
the same amount was expended
making the expensea foi the two
years $11066.02 leaving a ballance
to Jbe credit of the Cherokee na-
tion of $1093?.00. Of this amount
mere was uuiawiguy collected $o
607.65 leaving a lawfully collect
ed ball an ce of $5362.25.
Another item of receipts for last
year is $2335.77 for board of
pupils and teacbdrs at the schools
; of the nation. This amount was
collected by the national treasurer
for which the -nation bad allowed
him ten percent. All the trouble
' it had caused the' agency was the
acknowledgement of the draft for
the amount. It is fair to suppose
'as the agency does not enlighten
us on the subject that a like
amount was paid the previous
' year as the treasurer then collect-
ed same and the Cherokee nation
; paid the ten percent. This would
make a total of receipts accounted
for $4661.54' which cost the
agency nothing to collect and
which had already been paid for
leaving a net ballance to the Cher-
okees of $070.71. To be deducted
' from this is $299 53 ballance
school fund turned in which was
already the property and in the
possession of the Cherokee ration
this leaving a ballance to the
credit of the collectors of $371.18
of lawfully collected revenues of
the Cherokee nation which had
not before been paid for.
How much unlawful merchan-
dise tax there was collected the
first year we have no means of
knowing or how much school bal-
lance was turned in. What ever
the amount was it reduces the
benefit of the collectors to the
Cherokee people just' that much.

THE CAMPAIGN.
l no ivansss wuy oi&r a iovei rorum
Feature.
The Kansas City Star has de-
cided upon a special feature for
the presidential campaign which
was never undertaken before by
any newspaper. At its request the
chairman of the two national com-
mittees Messrs. James K. Jones
and M. A; Hanna have selected
and appointed two- distinguised
writers to conduct in the Star a
department to be called"The Cam-
paign Forum." In this depart-
ment the arguments of each of the
two great parties will be presented
side by Bide day by day. . To
condnct the democratic side Mr.
Jones has selected and formally
appointed Willis J. Abbott chief
of the press bureau of the demo-
cratic national committee and for
the republican side Mr. Hanna
has selected and appointed the fa-
mous journalist and IiterateurMr.
Murat Halstead. Upon learning
the decision of the two chairmen
the Star immediately engaged the
two gentlemen and on Sunday
AugUBt 19 the campaign forum
was inaugurated to be con-
tinued in the regular issue of the
Star daily and Sunday until the
end of the campaign. An interest-
ing feature of the lorum will be
answers to questions upon cam-
paign topics submitted to the Star
to be answered by either Mr. Hal-
stead or Mr. Abbott or both. Un-;
der the circumstances the answers'
thus given will have the stamp of
authority of the national commit-
tees. OWns Ague cure is without doubt
the finest medicine it has been cor

dition to its chill quantities it is tbe
finest liver medicine we bate ever
