THOSE LONG LEASES
F.ve Big Muekogee Investment
Companies Have Already Gob-
bled One Million Acres of
Creek Land byLeases
That Amounj to
Deeda.
Chief Pleasant Porter of the
Creek nation if in Washington on
a twofold mit-f-ion. He defires the
ratification ot a supplemental
treaty with the Creek? and i also
anxious that some action be taken
by the interior department lo put
a ftop to the wholesale leasing ot
Creek land? by the. five invest-
companies that are operating in
the territory. According to state-
ments made by Chief Porter to Mr
W. A. Jones corumis? ioner of In-
dian affaire these speculators
have secured alreadv nearly 10U0-
000 acres of Creek land under
lenses tbat practically amount lo
a deed They are working on a
plan lhat threatens the absorltion
by the investment ompanies of
nearly all of the landtd property
of the Creek?. In a lorg confer-
ence with Co mnjipsioner Jones th-
Creek chief explained the situa
lion in detail. He presented copies
of these lea?-? that ere ten gen
tered into tv the hundred and
explaiued the "method by which !
he declared the investment com-
panies taking advantage of the
Indiana' willingness to sell any
thing for a little money are get-
tins control of thousands of acres
ot most valuable lands in the
Creek nation.
The lease exhibited by Chiel
Porter ia of the ironclad variety.
It provides tbat the Indian shall
lease all rights titles and interests
ia their. lands to the investment
company for a period o! ninety
nine years at a fixed sum per an
num. The lease lhenrecites tbat
the investment companies desir-
ing to discount their obligation
oiler a lump sum to the Indians
inoteiid of the annual payments.
The further provision is made tbat
the Indians when they receive
theirtitles to the lands shall deed
them to the investment companies
in consideration ol another sum
named In the lease.
Commissioner Jones was in-
formed that five of these com-
panies located at Muscogee Wrg
oner and other towns in the terri
tury now have 050000 acres of
Creek lands tied up in such leases
avid have secured them for very
small pryments. Chief Porter is
very anxious to have some action
by the department of the interior
or seme legislation that ts ill put a
etp to this pystem which he de
clared is calculated tv cau-e end-
lets trouble and litigation when
the Creeks receive their deed to
their lands.
Commissioner Jones declared
that in his opinion the itst!
are n-t worth the rl'er they
fr written tn. bjt ti 1 Urt
doubtedly leid to litlg&ticn
nii i cufie much troahii in the
tinal deposition of the land. "Un-
der the Creek treaty" said Mr.
Jcn-s "ih" C;pf ks have a mht o
lease for a longer period of lime
than one year must be approved
by the interior department. Thee
long time leases of which Chief
Porter speaks have never been
submitted to the department and
are clearly violation of the law
Some action should certainly be
taken to prevent the Creeks from
being robbed by land sharks.
There would be millions in it for
these investment companies if
these leases Bhould be held
valid."
Chief Porter is also anxious lo
secure a supplemental treaty wiih
the Creeks by which the Indians
may secure their lands by acres
instead of a valuation basis as at
present provided.

Vet it is the hardest friend a man ever
had to keep. If you can use some good
common lumber just now we can save
you quite a bit. This is just the thing for
putting up sheds and such so if you want
some of it get here before it all goes.
And any time you need lumber or
building material lime cement plaster
paints oils etc and want your money's
worth here is the place to get it.
