HOW ARROWHEADS WERE MADE
We did not know until to-day how the
Indians made the flint arrowheads that
'are very often found all over the coun-
try. They had no tools to work with
and the question of how they made
them was not answered.. "Abe" Math-
eney who was for many years a heap
big chief of the Wahoo tribe says the
squaws broke flint rock into email
pieces by putting it into the fire.
They then selected a suitable piece
for an arrowhead held it in the fire
till it got hot then put a drop of wa-
ter on it which "chipped off" a small
particle of the flint and by this slow
and tedious process the squaws shaped
the arrowheads says the Kldorado Re-
publican. A look at an arrowhead will
convince one that this was the process
adopted to make them all they all have
rough surfaces.

"1 tpeut bix weeks of my young
manhood days in a certain rural
neighborhood ia Vermont" said a
Michigan eapitulibt as he smoked his
cigar in a Detroit hotel the other
evening "and as I was a fair-looking
chnD of 3. with (rood clothes and
plenty of money I waa an object of
adoration with all the girls lor seven
miles around. ' At the same time all
the young fellows wanted to punch
my head and for a time I nau we
whole community pretty badly unset.
"Of course I enjoyed the situation
and being a fair boxer I knocked out
the young farmers as fast as they
tried to corner me. There was one
girl among the two dozen I got
struck on and I should certainly have
laid my heart at her feet and she
might have been my wife to-day but
for the'trickiness of a farmer's man.
He loved Lucinda as well and he
'laid' for me. One bitter winter's
morning he came over to the house
and challenged me to a duel. We
were to touch tongues to an ax which
had been left out over night and the
one wlio 'hollered' first waa to be
the loser. '
"I had never gone into the science
of frost and I waa just fool enough
to try it. My rival got a chance to
touch his tongue to vinegar before
the test came and he gave that cold
ax a lick without results. Then I
seized it and put out my tongue and
was undone. It seemed as if my tongue
was nailed fast and as if knives were
cutting at it and they had to heat
two quarts of milk to bring about a
separation.
"For the next three days" contin-
ued the capitalist according to the
Detroit Free Press "1 couldn't speak
plain nor eat solid food and my true
love juet cuddled up to that smart
hired man and gave me the coldest
sort of shake. It was 'agin me all
over the neighborhood that I had
licked a cold ax and hollered and the
man who drove me five miles over
the hills to reach the railroad never
spoke to me until the journey was
finished. Then he looked at me in a
contemptuous way and said:
"Young man if you ever expect to
amount to anything in this world
you'll go home and practice lickin a
cold grindstone till it draws the
brain up out o' your feet.' "

THE INSECTS OF PANAMA.
Fir Tieka and Uorera Render Life
ea (be Iathmaa Anything Bat .
' Enjoyable.
Owing to lack of facilities for travel
comparatively little is known of the
everyday customs and conditions of
life In Central America and we are
prone t5 think of these tropical regions
as a place of lavish luxuriant vegeta-
taon everlasting sunshine gayly
pi mn a god birds ahd an id?al atmos
phere of relaxation and comfort. We
forget 'that during the rainy season
the mud is four feet deep on the roads
in Panama; that men diet like uogs
(during some seasons) in the street 50
fresh graves in a day being a common
sight; that sanitary regulations re-
ceive no consideration w hatever; that
. the soil is a mass of decaying vegeta
I 4ion that breathes out disease end
dleath; thut the haunting fear of
.ehagres jand yellow fever hangs over
every district of the isthmus and last
but not 5east that life is made one
round of torment by the legions of in
sect pest that ufest the whole coun
try Rays fwe LoS Angeles Time.
Indeed it' takes-a man of fortitude
and courage to"1 face a life in Panama
No amount of ffne scenery and the gay
coloring of flower and wing will really
compensate for the physical discern
forts that these myriads of insect
forms bring to man especially to the
white man who is les inured to tor
tures of that kind than is his black
brother. And yet many Americans go
tnere suffer the trials that such a cli
mate and life entail and often come
out none the worse for the experience
We consider the flea of California
troublesome enough but he is Dotting
compared with the little creature that
takes his place on the Isthmus of Pan-
ama. This flea called "coloradilla"
(little red one) is a tiny flaming red
insect almost microscopic. His dimin
utive size renders him impossible to
capture which is one of his advantages
over the fleas of the temperate climates
(the latter being easily caught if one
is sufficiently agile). Unlike our fleas
however the coloradilla has no hop.
ping ability but he sticks firmly to the
flesh wherever he chooses to locate
As he cannot readily be seen with the
naked eye it is impossible to remove
him by any ordinary means and one t
only relieLis to bathe in alcohol. S
numerous are these fleas and so annoy
ing theic bite that an alcohol bath is
necessary every night before retiring.
To neglect this duty is to spend hours
of sleeplessness.
Another insect far more venomous
in its effect and pronounced by the
miners who go into the interior as their
greatest enemy is a small creature
that gets into the flesh of the feet usu
ally about the nail. This insect bur
rows beneath the skin and lays an egg
that soon hatches causing itching
swelling and intense pain. The little
sac in w hich the egg is laid) swells rap
idly and the severe pain thus caused
necessitates immediate removal of this
foreign substance.. It frequently hap
pens that blood poisoning sets in and
a toe or a foot has to be amputated to
save life.
The Americans who are quick w itted
enough take their cue from the na
tives and remove the little insect in
truder as soon as the itching is felt
If allowed to remain until Hie swelling
begins the operation of removing is a
painful one. And again a certain skill
is necessary in order not to draw the
blood and this may be acquired by
observation of the blacks who have re
duced to a scientific basis the process
of cuttine- out "this little insect.
Indeed the only protection against
these insects and another quite simi
lar that bores beneath the skin is to
learn the art of removing them. For
no buckskip leggings or stiff walking
boots are stout or close enough to
hindeT these intruders from finding
their way to the human flesh and ones
only comfort lies in doing "as the
Romans do. It is a common sight to
see a native suddenly sit upon the
ground ana begin operating upon his
toes. He makes a few .incisions in the
skin and is on his way again thinking
no more of his skillful surgical opera-
tion than he would of of shifting the
position of a flea.
Another source of common annoy-
ance in the way of insect life in that
land of manana is the sand fly. This
minute being is omnipresent and he
makes himself known by a bite that is
far worse than that of the ordinarv

mosquito. Another dissimilarity from
the later is that the sand fly fives no
announcing' hum or singing as he ap-
proaches but like many another of
the poisonous creatures of Panama is
right there "for business" before one
has a chance for protection againsthis
sting. In many cases he poisons the
skin so badly that swelling and great
pain are the result and the only rem
edy is diluted ammonia or some other
solution used to extract poison from
the bites of venomous insects and rep-
tiles. These are but a fewof the torment-
ing creatures of that sunny clime.
Their number is legion for the trees
long the river banks are hung with
poisonous snakes which are dreaded
more by the natives than are any other
living things and there is hardly a
tone but underneath shelters some
venomous creature that has a fond-
ness for the human fle;h

Since the erection of the Falguiere
tatue of Balzac anecdotes and rem-
iniscencea of the famous author con-
tinue to pour in streams through the
French magazines and daily papera.
The Mercure de France recalls an inci
dent originally given in a book called
"Balzac in Slippers." Balzac at home
was in the habit of drinking tea Uiat
might be fairly regarded as both
unique and fabulously valuable. He
never gave it to an acquaintance; rare
ly even to his friends'. It was reserved
for special occasions and for special
people. This tea of course had a his-
tory. It was gathered by young and
beautiful virgins chosen lor the pur
pose who had to pick the leave before
sunrise and then carry them singing
to the Chinese emperor. The latter had
given a consignment of it to the Rus-
sian emperor and it was through a
well known Russian minister that
Balzac received his precious beverage.
This golden tea had moreover been
further baptized as it were in human
blood during ita transfer a very mur
derous encounter taking place between
the caravan bearing Hand an offensive
native t ribe. There was also a super-
stition attached to it; that more than
one cup of this almost sacred liquid
was a desecration and cost thedrinker
the loss of his eyesight. One of Balzac's
greatest friends LaurentJan never
drank it without remarking drjly
first:
Once again I risk an eye but it's
worth it."
